I'm confused now. Is this a all new cable or is this part of the EASSY project?
If this is a new project then the EASSY administrator should take a look at what these guys are doing as they know how to manage a project!!!

It's another cable. There are quiet a few in the pipeline ie. Flag, Eassy, Seacom. Neotel is involved in Seacom as well.

looks like a new cable .... at this rate we gonna have more cables than we know what to do with ... but the landing rights still remain a problem .... cables everywhere .... but no one can use them without telskum

The landing rights problem is not a problem.
Telkom have the landing rights to the Sat-3 cable in south africa. This is an agreement with the consortium that own the cable.
There is no law at the moment that says that telkom have landing rights exclusivity to any new cable entering sa.

Shaun, Don't panic - the thin red line from SA <-> Asia on your map is the existing SAFE cable.
Actually, the map is not very meaningful. Both SAFE and the new cables from East Africa will be capable of being upgraded, and so providing more than their initial bandwidth, by simply adding new equipment at the terminal stations.
Modern systems are very scaleable - the owners usually pay for the submrine plant plus terminal equipment to meet their initial requirements. They then buy new terminal equipment as demand for capacity rises.

AFAIK, they will wait for LLU. They have however awarded a multi-million rand contract for the supply of NG SDH (Next Generation Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) transmission equipment to Spescom Telecommunications.
