They've had it since end of 2014. Samsung rolled it out in 2012 I think. All Android phones should have it with Nougat.

The would drive me insane.
Apple's approach to multitasking (at least on phone) is more on a responsive core functions sense.
Like if I has enabled pop-up notifications for this Tapatalk app and you just replied to me that would have come up in Youtube and I could have responded right there. (Don't quote me on that I've never set it up like that but it should work).
So it's not a case of being incapable of multitasking but just in a typical Apple sense it being more curated/selective.
Apple don't believe in comprised/inferior experiences. So they'll rather do away with the notion completely if they can't do it properly.
Which is why they introduced it to the bigger iPad where the screen real estate makes it useful.

How do you live with yourself, with all those notifications?Can somebody please tell me if the iPhone can now do true multi tasking
Like watch YouTube, while reading an email and checking Facebook?

You can quick reply within the notification drop-down and apps like WhatsApp popup in the middle of the screen if enabled and you can reply directly.
Left side split-screen on phones, right side reply within notification window.
And apps like WhatsApp do this if you enable it:
I'd rather have the choice if it's useful/useless.

I'm not sure why the notifications in the status bar is an issue. I much prefer if that way, than have a pop up appear all the time. I follow a lot of sports teams, from UK football, to US Basketball,so I get alerts all the time on goals etc. Besides, you can get pop up alerts on Android as well, but like I said, much prefer it like that.

Though one way iOS notifications are better is the lock screen implementation, I prefer the fact that the email header + a line appear on the lock screen or a couple of lines of an SMS, on Android I just get the envelope or GoSMS icon, while driving with iOS I can decide whether I need to pull over and handle the SMS or email or ignore it until I get to my destination.
I'd like to be able to have similar when using Android.

Wish I never got rid of all my Nokias from back then. I think I still have a 8910i and a 8850 here somewhere.
Funny though, back then it was all about how small the phone is, now it's all about how big the screen is

I didn't say Android can't do it, I was simply explaining Apple's approach to him as he doesn't seem to have the hands on exposure to it.
Wanting the choice is fine. I make that choice by turning it off.

Kind of where I was heading with it.
As an Apple (preferred) user it's an over the top cluttered mess to me and one of the big default things I don't like much about Android.
Probably an anomaly amongst other users but I actually turn most notifications off an simply have badge icons on (the little red numbers) for my most important apps that sit on my home screen.
Since TouchID it has been transparent to login and get to the home screen so the Lock Screen is a silly menu that just gets in my way.
Much easier to unlock phone and get a "dashboard" view sans the clutter.
I think the contested issue from the Android side is often they they see minimalism as simplism which isn't necessarily the case.
Wrt IOS I've been using apple ecosystem for 5 going 6yrs so 4S, 5S, 6S and soon 7S.
This year was the 1st year I've had a major issue when they rolled out the 2nd or 3rd last patch 10.2.1 which had my phone crash. Now as bad as it was.. eventually I did what I didn't want to in the end.. wiped and restored from iCloud which fixed everything after I determine was config & virt mem mess up due to the patch not correctly forcing storage req for install. Anyway.. after a full back up(i use it a lot so incremental) & restore phone was working again.. good as new. Now how many people do that with Android!
Lastly.. last major update for iOS pushed a full new file system, how many failures do u know about? Me.. none.. that's crazy! Try doing that on a windows machine

Apple is about seamlessness & focus afforded to apps. So overlaying other apps other than the system notifications, control I just don't think is going to happen. It's dumb and if you own an app, that means prime screen real estate while users in your app.
I dunno about you, but I generally focus on a handful things only and screen / form factor determines the number. Apple has had multi-tasking, background tasks etc for a while now but won't budge on combined screens other than on iPad which I personally think is good. Apps are used in full screen mode and a number are active till disuse makes them go into a sleep state until push happens.
Only one thing annoys me tho.. watching a vid via safari which is airplayed to tvOS/AppleTv4 still requires you to keep safari active as a top primary app.. <-- that annoys me

Sounds like the update that replaced the filesystem went a bit awry.
It's an astounding engineering feat that it actually went smoothly on the majority of handsets.
Not when sure if that would have been possible on a more open system like Android.
Frankly it was utter madness but Apple pulled it off.
