($29495 x 11) + insane SA duties = R500k+
This makes me a sad panda. Will need to wait a year or two.

Cheaper than a 4x4 Hilux or Ranger DC? Not a chance...
its less versatile than either of those vehicles...
Okay, Fortuner then.
That's only until you use it for its intended purpose... Solid axle off roader of note. I would take it over a double cab or Fortuner any day.
Agreed, as an offroader, it smokes the hell out of things like the Ranger, Fortuner etc....
Just as a normal person, my offroading is about 5% (at most) of the use of my vehicle, so I would favour a more versatile vehicle over the Wrangler....
Granted, I'm a very a-typical consumer in this regard... I couldn't care less about the name, its what the product does and such that is important for me... So much so that I'm keeping a close eye on the Chinese and I want to see what their next generation of vehicle looks like, I expect them to give the current crop a good run for their money in most regards.
GWM is obviously the best of the bunch. What I read on the 4x4 forums however, is that the guys are having all kinds of issues with the Steed 5. Can't handle even moderate off road abuse, rusts, turbo's go etc, etc. I think they still have a long way to go.
but the idea of taking nearly R500k offroad makes me cringe...
Gauteng roads = offroad![]()
Its not the roads that worries me.. the underside of the vehicle is designed for that crap...its the paintwork and such that gets scratched to hell and back when doing proper offroading.
My one client took his 1 week old Ranger Wildtrak (that bronze orange colour) to a Ford off road event. Light scratches down the side, through the bushes. Does not seem phased by it![]()
It's not called a Wildtrak for nothing. That thing is insane offroad.
Just as good as any other 4x4 Ranger. Difference is mostly cosmetic...

OMG, that is one seriously ugly Jeep
And it actually gets worse in other colours.

Given what I've seen, I would call it acceptable offroad, its not massively better than the standard Ranger..
