3G/HSPA/LTE Routers

Damn, I also bought this router and have been having lots of disconnects with the Cell C (MR-3420 with white speedstick).

I though it was Cell C's network but Ajax and others makes me definitely suspect the router's no good! Pretty pissed off that I bought it now. I wonder if I can get a refund from DBG or uniterm direct or whatever.

You must analyse the problem methodically - during times when you struggle to connect with the router, quickly then plug the modem straight into the pc. Connect with MDMA. Observe the behaviour for a while, even while idle (MDMA will show "3G" instead of "HSPA+") Then back into the router. Observe. If it works well on the pc, with a similar or weaker signal than what you get on the router, then the router is (probably) at fault. Unless the router is tyring to connect to an unstable tower and the pc a different but stable one.

Things I've tried so far that didn't help:
1) Soldering a capacitor onto the USB port hoping it was a USB power stability problem - didnt' work.
2) Disabling mass storage on the USB modem thinking/hoping the cd-rom capability of the modem was confusing the router when it rebooted the modem - didn't help.
3) Fan blowing through the router's vents and also onto speed stick to check if it was overheating - didn't help
4) Plugging the router's power supply into my UPS hoping it was Eskom - didn't help

Friends of mine have the same stability problems.

One mystery remains, and I'm going to test more in the next few days: Why the router didn't disconnect with an MTN sim in the modem. Could've been luck, but I will check again. Synaesthesia, if you have an MTN sim, maybe test too?
 
Right, because people have been complaining a lot about Cell C instability. I have a Vodacom sim, will try with that. It worked pretty much flawlessly with a Mifi before.

Will try those suggestions of yours, thanks.

Very nice!

The TP-Link supports Openwrt but they haven't ported the 3G modem support to the TP-Link version yet. Hoping it will happen soon.

Wait, is it impossible then to use an existing (older - the Mega 105WR) wireless router to get internet connectivity on other devices? My speed stick is plugged into my computer, which is connected via ethernet to my router. I also have an Xbox connected to that router, and would like to connect wireless devices. Is there any way I can share the host pc's internet connection via the router so that my other wired devices have internet connectivity?
 
Yes, there is a way to do it, google ICS.... Trust me u going to have endless issues also know the DNS server that CELL C use etc, it can be done but its a long process... I am doing that at the moment my xbox is plugged into my computer, dongle onto computer as well... Google ICS, it will take u few hours but u will come right, u need to setup bridge connection, etc, then change the network settings on your xbox, the process can take about 2hours if you don't know how to set up things but once u know bout 20minutes or less
 
Hi Guys
This is my first post. I too bought the 24Gb data package and got the ZTE MF190 modem. I have the TP-Link MR3420 3G router and have not been able to get the router to recognise the modem.
Has anybody had any success with this combination?
 
Have updated the routers firmware to the latest firmware. Also downloaded the bin file for the ZTE MF190. Still no joy

Hoping so for your part too, seems the TP-Links are giving quite a lot of issues

Awesome indeed. Bought it off Take2 for R1297, which I think is dead cheap! They retail for about R1800+ on most online stores Take 2 Link
With DD-WRT I have
USB Support (3g and NAS Server, which is not very fast, but nice to use)
Bandwidth monitor which is really nifty

The list can go on forever, but that would go off topic. If you do decide to get one, PLEASE make sure you read the DD-WRT documentation on the E3000 properly to avoid bricking your router! Feel free to ask if you have issues!

I agree with Richard. To make your life easier, rather invest in a 3G capable router
 
Hey guys,

I got myself the Airlive Traveler3G wireless router and I'm struggling to get my Cell C speedstick (Model MF190) to work on it. I have the 2gig/month package, so it's the 7.2mpbs modem. It asks me for the following information

PIN: Specified this
APN: internet
User Name: Blank (should I add something here?)
Password: Blank (should I add something here?)
Verify Pasword: Blank (should I add something here?)
Service: 3G/3.5G Only (UMTS/HSPA/HSDPA)
AT Dial Script: *99#

The "internet" LED on the modem is just flashing and there is no internet connection. The light on the Cell C modem is also red.

Can anyone assist me with the setup of this, please? Would really appreciate it.

Edit: I have removed the PIN from the modem, and the light on the speedstick is now green. The "internet" LED on the router is still just flashing though. :(

Edit2: Just checked the System Log, and I get this error:
local2.err pppd[1099]: In file /var/dial/modem-options: unrecognised option '/dev/ttyUSB-1'

Edit3: I tried another 3G modem on the router and it worked. So it looks like the ZTE MF190 USB modem isn't compatible with the router? Is this possible?

I could not get it working again. Anybody have any pointers what I can try? It still works fine with Vodacom and MTN SIM cards. Thanks

Well, my Cell C on an R201 router problem sorted it self out. I could not use the pair together for about 2 weeks, then all of a sudden it worked again!? So far I am very happy with the Cell C connection and speed. Seems to be a good bit faster than my Vodacom connection, on average.

Quite possible. The Cell-C ZTE MF190 doesn't work with the TP-Link routers either.
