Hi folks,

just upgraded my line from 384kbps to 4mbps and i'm not seeing the expected results. I'm using the Billion 7202G router and it syncs at 384kbps up and 4096kbps down with the following noise margins and attenuation:

Noise Margin (Upstream) 12.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 20.5 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 24.0 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 38.0 db

I get the following speed test results:

speedtest.net (jhb mirror): down - 424kbps, up - 315kbps
speedtest.net (cpt mirror): down - 427kbps, up - 166kbps
speedtest.net (nyc mirror): down - 371kbps, up - 128kbps

openweb.co.za: down - 386kbps / 48KB/sec
games.saix.net: down - 377kbps / 47KB/sec
gamco.co.za: down - 592kbps / 74KB/sec

Using 4 concurrent connections downloading from saix ftp file vault i get 52KB/sec.

I had a look at some threads on this topic:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=96678
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=91559
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=91144

but could not find a solution. I tried the cablenut tweaks etc.

Any suggestions before i phone Telkom?

Jou telefoon kabel is vrot. Or you are to far from the DSLAM.

Your noise and attenuation values indicates that it's either or both.

You using a SAIX-based account, IS, or Verizon?
Are you using a proxy? Some proxies will slow down your browsing.
You're doing speedtests during mid office-hours. Speeds are almost always way lower during the day as opposed to evening, on weekdays, at least for me.

try pulling the power on your router for 10 seconds. then plugging it back in. you normally need to re-establish your pppoe connections to your isp to get the upgraded speed and this is normally the quickest method.

^^ wat jy waar kry ?! - his values are PERFECTLY healthy ...20 SNR down with 38 attenuation down.

i'd give it and hour or two...if a local multithreaded download from the same TIER1 ISP website/ftp doesn't give you greater than 52 KB/sec - then phone 375 375.

Go into your router, set it to Bridged mode, create a new broadband dialup connection in Windows, enter your details and connect. After you connected just test the SAIX FTP Vault again, if it's still the same, disconnect the dialup connection, re-enter your details in the router and take Bridge mode off, then save your settings, switch the router off for about 10 minutes (come on, you can wait 10 minutes right?) switch back on and it should be ok.

Don't know why, but I've done this on a few new lines which have been upgraded to faster speeds and it always works. Remember, don't test your download speed for instance on download.com, because everyone gets bad speed from some sites, use SAIX or the Telkom.co.za speed tests and see the improvement, again, not every single site or download location gives you max speed ;)

Maybe i'm 3rd time lucky, this is now my third reply to this thread. Don't know what happened.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm using a SAIX shaped account with no proxy. A buddy about 2km's away gets 3489kbps from speedtest.net. He tested a couple of minutes ago. Unplugged the router, no joy.

What i find interesting is that the upload speed seems correct or at least improved a bit??

ok, tested with broadband dailup connection, same results +- 50KB/s with 4 connections. switching the router off for 10mins :o
I know i won't get max speed, but surely better than 400kbs?
will report back...

Cool, If it doesn't work, sorry, but just try it ;)

longest 10mins ever!!

ok, router came back up, synced at 4096kbps. connected to the internetz and did a speed test. same results. then router acted all wierd. lost the connection to the net and saw the following in the router system log:

Mar 6 16:01:28 syslog: KERNEL: assertion (idev->ifa_list==NULL) failed at devinet.c(108):in_dev_finish_destroy
Mar 6 16:01:28 syslog: KERNEL: assertion (idev->mc_list==NULL) failed at devinet.c(109):in_dev_finish_destroy
Mar 6 16:01:28 syslog: Freeing alive in_device 80e37270

all downloads still +- 420kbps

First off

Your line attenution and snr for both up and downstream are very good so you should be synching at 4096kbps without line drops.

You have not said what time of the day you tried dling content. The internet is shaped in SA during the day and you will get crap speeds.

You said that you were dling from the FTP server with 4 concurrent connections which pretty much means that you are using a download manager. Perhaps either the dl manager or other software (netlimiter etc.) has been set to restrict your download speeds?

Hi Hades,

I've been testing since about 2:30pm. My buddy did the tests at the same time and got 3489kbps while i was getting +-420kbps. I'm using FreshDownload for the concurrent d/l's and set it to unlimited bandwidth. Also not using netlimiter or any QoS on the router.

I agree with Hades, test it tonight just after 18:00 pm ;)

latest test at 6:45pm

telkom shaped account: 430kbps
WA unshaped account: 444kbps

Is the 375375 number open after hours? been holding for like 30mins already

The number is open after hours. I just got through after holding for 1 hour 20 min.

Good news for all you guys and gals, 8mb lines should be out soon, currently testing it out here :D, works like a bomb

1.6gb in just under 4min, very yummy stuff

Getting about 2.8mb down per sec on flashget

And, will it be a new package, or do I get bumped up because I'm on 4mb? Don't be all diplomatic, spit out the truth tiger ;) :D :p
