I suspect that many people will jump ship, and then jump back once they realise that most of their contacts still use Whatsapp. It's a futile exercise to prove a point that isn't going to inconvenience anybody other than yourself. IMO of course...

I only started using whatsapp because "everyone" in my contact list was using it at the time and I needed to find an alternative to bbm. I'm not really keen on moving away from whatsapp but you have to ask yourself - would there even be this thread if there wasn't a rather large portion of whatsapp users that don't like the idea of using a FB "product" so to speak?

Can you think of an example? And the fact that FB now has your cell number is not a good example, they have had mine for years (it's on my profile), and they clearly did nothing with it.

That FB can use anything I receive or send in whatsapp for research purposes and/or to better their service or any crap along those lines?

A rather large portion of users may not like the idea, but the majority of users will remain unfazed. Hence it being a futile exercise to leave just to prove a point.

With WhatsApp having such having such a huge presence they are not going anywhere. Remember even this forum will represent the minority of users, the majority wont even know about the purchase.

You'd have to convince you entire contact list to move over to get rid of it and everyone in that contact list convince theirs too. The foothold is strong.

I've used GTalk for many years, as did most of my primary contacts. When Hangouts was "forced" on us (yes, I use a rooted phone so I can get back to Gtalk but most people won't even dream of rooting their phones!) it took only weeks for most to abandon Hangouts. I liked the multi-platform capabilities of GTalk and the ability to have two accounts on one device, however Hangouts made everyone jump ship. I don't see anyone going back anytime soon. I don't have a FB account, neither many of my contacts. The moment FB requires me to "integrate" my FB and Whatsapp accounts I will jump ship.

Expecting people to move away from Whatsapp? Remember getting people to move away from blackberry? A long road...

Going to stick with WhatsApp, I really see no reason to change.

People going OTT with their reactions as usual. MS acquiring Skype didn't really change it much, and I expect it to be much of the same with Whatsapp.

MS didn't need to, Skype was a very profitable product before MS bought it, and it's become many times more profitable in the years hence. Business model didn't need to change. Whatsapp makes basically no money, and now FB needs to recoup $19bil to make shareholders happy. Clearly SOMETHING has to change with their business model.

They'll probably start charging for it across the board, like they do on iOS.

I'm using Telegram now. Works fine for me and the people I have recommended it to

Even the gardener who started using Whatsapp a week ago knows about the purchase.

Telegram looks promising. A lot of my contacts have joined WeChat. I get 1 email a week at week saying that a friend has joined WeChat.

Been happily using Viber for a while now. Easy to use and a nice alternative to [-]Facebook[/-] :erm: WhatsApp.

Except that Facebook has a history of being pretty much against pro-privacy practices. As far as I am concerned they have done little to change that perception. The remain a concern for me. I do a wide walk around Facebook & WhatsApp wherever I can.

Winner Takes All.

That is all.

Abba?

hmm... yes sure, facebook bought whatsapp because it's such an amazing technology.......

Just curios.. Why all the hangouts hate? I use it for my ingress group as well as quite a few other contacts with whom I chat and it seems alright to me.

The fact that it isn't a native app for starters.
Copy pasting from it sucks.
Searching for a person brings up everyone in the world instead of just filtering my contacts.
