Go away! ;)

I live in a notoriously bad 3G area. Lovely hill in the background, s**t signal in the foreground. Top it off Telkom screwed up the exchange by oversubscribing so I was forced to cancel my ADSL and move to a wireless alternative. The only provider with decent signal in the area? 8.ta (damned if you do, damned if you don't).

Of course those greedy bastards at Telkom have not oversubscribed on 3G, as well. My latency goes for a ball of s**t during business hours, but at least my downloads are at 3 Mb/s. However, my uploads are so slow I can barely send an email :(

EDIT: Nevermind, seems some atmospheric conditions are messing up my signal during daylight hours. A little manoeuvring and I'm at 75ms, 4.0 Mb/s and 1.0 Mb/s. Next up? The roof!

@SHiBBY Sies man! ;)

Very excited to get home this afternoon and chat with the 8ta techie.

Speeds last night were very very bad, again. So no fear that the guy (or girl) rocks up and I have 6mbps download speeds! :wtf:

What will tech do at my place? Test the signal Try to connect with their Netbook/Notebook?
Have dinner? Install an antenna? Mow the lawn?

Well try and squeeze as much out as you can, I always say ;-)

I seriously have no idea why my speeds are suddenly soaring, but I'm totally stoked! YouTube, BF3 online, it's all good...

I am one very happy camper at this stage! With the addition of an extended antenna, I'm hoping to hit 15-18mbps soon, and pings no higher that 60ms.

That's not bad. The 8ta Down/Up ratio is like 6 to 1. See my speeds above as well. But luckily the majority of my internet activity includes downloading rather than uploading, so I'm not really bothered...

Hi, we would like to investigate.
Please email your 8ta number, contact details and physical address to [email protected].
Please make reference to this thread and mention MyBroadband in the subject line.
Thank you

Ha! How stoopid is me?

8ta guy was here - very friendly and very clued on the tech. And guess what? 8ta knows about MyBB!

Anyhow, he tested the modem and the speed via his netbook - same as my results on my PC.
8ta's network delivered above avergae speeds when we tested but he confirmed my speed issues.

We talked about the fluctuations and disconnections and all that, and he confirmed that 8ta are aware of the issues and are working on fixing them. Cool beans. :)

So thank 8ta for having well spoken, presentable and friendly technicians!

Thanks for the response but as Murphy would have it not 5 mins later I moved the dongle only 30 cm and haven't looked back! I've been suffering on and off for weeks and all that was required was a minor move...

This area is notoriously bad for sudden signal loss on all networks, in fact the reason I chose 8.ta was because it was the best the lot.

So everything is looking good, I will keep you appraised.

Glad to hear.
If you have any issue, please email us.

I just torrented 570MB in 30 mins whilst simultaneously watching YouTube videos, all on my crappy E220. Yes, I'm happy.

Tested first time since 8ta tech came to my house.
He said I should expect any immediate results.
Well, I waited and BAM! - the 8ta I fell in love with is back!

These results are from multiple tests to each server using the E173 8ta branded modem. The modem is linked to the PC via a standard 40cm USB cable (the one you get with Vodacom's USB modems) and placed on the same spot as I placed my HTC Desire and other modems during tests - ie. I didn't search for the best reception spot.
Also, no antenna was hook up to the modem.

Torrents hit 500Mbps downloads which means 350Mb downloads in about 16min.

*** As I was finishing the LA run of Speedtest, the connection dropped and refused to reconnect, a while later it reconnected (about an hour - blame Skyrim for not knowing exactely!) ***

UPDATE: An 8ta tech phoned me this morning to follow up on my complaint - it was escalated on the system yesterday.
Since my connection is just about back to where it was before the November drop, I told him all is well. He understood my concerns regarding the issues and pointed out that some towers had some problems that are fixed during maintenance.
Thanks 8ta for actually listening to us. It takes a while but it is worth it!

The networks are deteriorating day by day, as you get busier with new customers the speed and quality gets worse.

It has now become unacceptable, Waverley & Craighall Park Jhb. I am using Huawei B660 & B683 modems, & external antennas

I have connected to different towers but the results are still the same down to 200 kbs. & intermittent, I believe that this is an overloaded network problem, selling services on a not ready network.

If this situation does not improve to at least a minimum of 2000 kbs continuous down & 750 kbs up in the next 60 days, I will be cancelling the contract & not paying the R800.00 cancellation fee.

Hoping something can be done to rectify this situation

I'm in Paulshof, 8ta coverage map shows me smack-dab in the middle of full 3g and 2g coverage, yet I'm getting this:

Good times.

8ta Dashboard says 5 bars .. ya.. right.

Trying a program called Mobile Data Monitoring Application (MDMA - I know right? lol), fastest connection I've had today - don't even get me started on last night. I was lucky to get 1 bar of WCMA (? - can't remember what the abbreviation is).

:(

Slightly Better:

Again:

.. I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to go A LOT higher than 1.5mbps, correct? :/

Update: This on 4 bars:
