Absa Banking Charges

I'm busy moving over to FNB, added all my ABSA charges for last month and it came to a staggering R480 for internet banking, a gold credit card and a gold cheque account. On FNB I'll be paying R90 all in for this! :)

waaaaaaaaaaaaaat lol. insane i tell you! that's like 5 times cheaper.

Don't be fooled - from the frying pan into the fire. From my experiences of Absa/FNB, FNB are worse by a long way. I paid my FNB card late by 3 days (my fault yes) and FNB charged me a cool R165 penalty. Lovely. Must say I now pay a few days earlier. JUst waiting for my bonus and I will pay off and close the account. If they charged me a R20 penalty I would likely accept but R165 is legalised robbery. You have been warned. Charges may be a little lower but they catch you elsewhere. Your best form of action is to go see Absa and negotiate. There are various packages available. It is a lot of hassle to move an account.

I just noticed the following on my transaction history:

2008-02-29
INTERNET BANK FEE
R -19.95

2008-03-01
ADMIN CHARGE
R -19.00

2008-03-01
MANAGEMENT FEE
R -15.00

What are all those about? Unless I'm mistaken it is usually about R20 a month, not R50? This is a student savings account.

Internet bank fee is your use of internet banking.
Admin charge is basically the same as above.
And management fee is their way of telling you, we charge you because we keep it up and running.

By the way Nedbank have a cheque account at a fixed fee of R85 per month INCLUDING the cost of Interet and Cellphone Banking. If you can put up with the slow/pedantic service at the branches then it is not a bad option. I use electronic banking and never go into a branch so it suits me.

ABSA also have one.

We have to pay high charges because of armed security costs, atm's being blown up, cash in transit heists, bank robberies...

and you get charged a nice fat fee if you deposit a huge sum into someone elses account.

If this is reallly true, then Internet banking and Debit orders would be free to encourage people to stop dealing with cash.

But ... the banks are just raping us cos they can, while the banking adjudicator is paid millions to do diddly squat.

i have not paid a cent in fees in the last 3 years.

I'm with Pick n Pay Go Banking and offer free banking overall.

On an average month I do:
10 debit orders
10 payments to third party beneficiaries
4 cash withdrawls @ Pick n Pay tillpoint

All I have EVER pay is R12-00 per month for internet banking fees.

The ONLY condition: keep a balance of R5 000-00
Oh, the other issue is that they do not give out cheque books at all.

might not sound like a good deal to some but definitely works for me!

Yea I dunno why Go Banking doesn't come up more often ... I think they're awesome as well!

I urge anyone who plans to cancel their ABSA accounts, to make sure they specify that the account is being closed because of the ripoff banking fees. They need to know that we won't stand for this any longer.

All banks suck, but I'd rather be with the one who sucks the least. And in my opinion, that is FNB. (I've had experience with most banks).

I make it my mission to avoid banking charges at all costs. Even if that means having to stand in queues to pay accounts, so that I can avoid these fees.

Concerning GoBanking. If you have R5000 to "invest" then the GoBanking features are by far the most cost effective. But they offer by far the worst service ever! I was with them for a few years but had constant problems. Things got so bad that I eventually had to contact the CEO to get things sorted out. I then decided it was time to close the account, as the stress it was causing me was just ridiculous.

Remember, GoBanking is basically Nedbank and they are known for their terrible service.

I canceled my ABSA Internet Banking on the 28th of Feb - I made sure that I selected that it was too $$$ :D

I got an email that my Internet banking has been disabled - on the 3rd of March. They better not charge me for March or else....

I can definitely recommend FNB. I've received excellent service in the 4 years I've been with them. Their internet banking and inContact service is free. You'll save a bundle on that alone.

These are my monthly ABSA bank charges.

2008-02-29 INTERNET BANK FEE
-46.65

2008-03-01 MIN SERVICE FEE
-30.00

2008-03-01 TRANSACTION CHARGE
-179.90

2008-03-01 ADMIN CHARGE
-57.35

I hate ABSA.

Yet you still with them.

I would rather pay R12 a month for shocking service than a couple of hundred for good service from ABSA, whom I HATE!!

FNB Bank Charges:
#MONTHLY ACCOUNT FEE -66.00

Rest of the month, no matter what I do, whether it be card swipes, EFT's, BOB ATM Withdrawals, Debit Orders, inContact SMS's, Internet Banking:
