ADSL international connectivity problems (29 June 2012)

Thanks Justin, word is July 1st repairs will be done :).

From saix bot on mybb

Info differs though. We had 5 different dates flying around earlier today.
We're posting the feedback we're getting - so fingers crossed :)

Thanks donn. We have all this high tech monitoring in place with graphs and tables to tell us that everything's working fine, but it still feels much better to hear it first hand from a happy customer :D

Thanks for being on top of things when it comes to international connectivity.

M-Web has come a long way in the last few years and I am super-impressed with your service, and the packages offered. Excellent! Please pass on my best wishes to the rest of the "back room" team that keeps everything going.

Donn
P.S. I tried sending this as a private message but the ISDSL system sucks so badly it wouldn't send ;-)

Can't believe the problem is still not fixed.
And it is happening at the end of the month meaning I won't be able to utilize my full cap.

I trust Telkom's word ;)

/not saying don't trust you guys :)...it has been a long day.

The repair ship can only chug along so quickly, unfortunately :(

Anybody heard about IS and what they may be doing for business connectivity?

I have 200kbps for my entire building. Staff have gone home (those that can)

Nothing loads.

IS have taken a lesson from the Dept of Basic Education: deny, deny, deny. They aren't even answering their emails. Ronnie Apteker would have had a fit if he was in charge. He isn't. It shows.

4 hours ago they tweeted:
Internet Solutions ‏@IS_global
We are still experiencing International latency and packet loss issues and will revert with an ETA as soon as possible

Anyone who uses the word "revert" like that is a moron.

I'm just glad we moved away from ADSL and onto Neotel fibre for our business. See all the complaints but don't feel a thing. ;)

Why has Afrihost STILL not put us on their backup cables? What the hell is going on Afrihost?

Afrishost Techie tunes me that they have to much load on there servers that is why it's so slow ....:wtf: Everything is insanely slow even local. local sites also take very long to open. I ask them why do they not have redundancy in place for this kind of problems ?
He tunes me they are not like the big guys like Mweb who belongs to Multichoice that have access to extra cables. again :wtf:

Sounds to me they are not prepared to buy extra bandwidth and rather wait, because it is only two days to the end of the month.
More money in there pockets if you ask me.

Looks like its time to signup with Mweb then since they will be able to assist. Best of all I am using expensive "business priority" capped internet. Afrihost is Pathetic ! Costing me to lose money on business.

Yep, there's often good reason for the different price points you see in the market. So if it looks too cheap you gotta ask yourself what shortcuts were taken to achieve that price.

considering Afrihost has recently had other problems I'd guess that a reconfiguration to address the previous fault could well mean that they are not able to easily roll onto other capacity. Sometimes by fixing a problem you make something that used to be a simple flip of the switch now to require another reconfiguration.

Interestingly it looks like this is marked as a SAT-3 not a Seacom problem and I thought most of the non-Telkom traffic is using Seacom with SAT as redundancy.

Unfortunately in the internet it seems several of murpheys laws apply on steroids or the universe could want the Afrihost CEO to become an anvil manufacturer.

This is very frustrating. Previously, when Seacom was down, I was prepared to live with it, since I knew there few alternatives for backup. This time round, I think Afrihost is going to lose users big time. With so many cables available, they have no reason to not have a redundant network. I'm on the Afrihost 1Mbps Uncapped, which is only R2 pm more expensive at MWeb, unless I'm missing something? If that is correct, it is almost a no-brainer for me to move over to MWeb now, knowing what kind of, or rather lack of, redundancy Afrihost got in place. Hopefully it won't affect my ping times for BF3 too much.. :)

As Justin mentioned in this thread earlier, we may have an earlier resolution - ie tonight.
Will keep everyone updated as things go along :)

Kinda easy to figure that one out ... the upstream provider needed to failover a large amount of their priority business traffic from SAT3 to Seacom, which obviously takes precedence over (re-sold) broadband.

Latest update from Afrihost website:

Update:
A fault was identified on European Indian Gateway (EIG) cable system off the coast of Portugal.
This has affected the SAT3 cable which has failed SAT3 traffic to SEACOM.
Seacom is at capacity at the moment and that’s why our ADSL is slow at the moment
Initial resolution time was Sunday but new developments indicate it may be resolved as early as 18h00 tonight

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Thank you for your patience this far.
