I got smart though, realised that one of my clients is on Mweb business - which apparently is working fine... so VPN'ed into their local branch and using their gateway now :p since I am their IT guy, I am pretty sure I wont mind...

RSAweb twote that the cable will only be fixed on 1 July 2012 (as per the network status notices). Article updated.

SAT-3 itself doesn't seem to be down. Is this one of the onward connections in Europe that needs to be fixed?
 
It shows up quite a few things like:
google.co.za is hosted offshore
News sites like News24 and IOL are hosted locally, but use ad servers which tend to hold the websites from loading. Why don't they use a local ad server or at least have a bypass if overseas connection fails.

That seems to be what the network status notices are indicating, but it is affecting the cable system.

Waiting for feedback from Telkom. Will be interesting to see if they'll provide feedback before the ISPs do.
 
I don't understand that with the huge influx of cables and international connectivity to SA that the break of the smallest one has such a ginormous impact on our connectivity. :wtf: Allthough I am totally open to a clever explanation.

Does the SAT3 link not "end" in Portugal/France and then each provider (Telkom/IS, etc) find their own onward link to the UK, etc.?
 
In other news, SEACOM engineers have decided to throw a celebratory party that it is not, in fact, SEACOM that is down this time...

I would like to know as well.

BTW why is it that I'm unable to use the ABSA site without it timing out every 20 seconds? I thought it's hosted locally.

Not to mention our expensive business package which should have some form of redundancy is barely usable as well.
 
And all the ISP's who dont use Sat3 will throttle their clients to save some cash while blaming it on this.
 
I have a little 1gb Mweb package as a backup to my Afrihost line exactly to help out in situations like this. However since it's almost the end of the month and I had not touched the 1gb Mweb account this month I decided to download something with it last night, thereby draining the whole 1gb backup account this morning. Ha! Clever. Next time I'll leave that until the very last day of the month.

Now I still have a few GB left at AFrihost that I was planning to use this weekend, but if this is going to last until 1 Jul as some say, then it looks like those gigs are gone. I wonder if Afrihost will let us roll that data over since it was not our fault that we could not use it before the end of the month... #wishfulthinking.
 
Int is 100% down on axxess(IS) 4meg uncapped. I thought internet solutions would have some kind of backup.

You pay them for redundancy. They must make a plan to bypass the broken cable by using one of the many cables we have.
