ADSL international connectivity problems (29 June 2012)

Morning everyone,

No further updates, we're still running at 80% capacity as per my post last night. Things do seem to look better though with latency seeing better performance.
I've requested an updated from our upstream providers however nothing has come through just yet. We're waiting on an ETA on when the ship starts performing repairs as well as a better ETR on final repairs.

In the mean time, here's some interesting reading on how undersea cables are repaired :)

There are still issues with Diablo 3 (games either don't start or are dropped immediately)

As I mentioned earlier, we can't expect gaming/ downloading etc to run smoothly during a cable break. We can only be patient unfortunately, and weather out the intermittent and poor connectivity.

Ok cool, just being hopeful that the 80% capacity catered for it.

The SAT-3 repair vessel is on-site, bringing the damaged part of the cable to surface to start running repairs. No ETR at this stage. More updates to follow as soon as we receive them.

We have been advised of continued maintenance on the undersea cable. Completion set for 5 July with possible intermittent issues until then
I asked them on Friday where I could find their network status page, and got the following bureaucratic reply from Pamela Khambule <[email protected]>:
Hi.
Unfortunately we do not have you listed as a Technical Contact. Please read the below documentation which explains why we have this policy and how you can go about getting your request actioned.
To ensure the reliability of your network we maintain a Technical Contact (TC)
list. This list is used for the filtering of incoming requests. Before any
requests can be actioned - we need to confirm the request came from a
listed contact.
REASONS FOR THE TC LIST'S EXISTANCE (sic): ...
In other words: we don't speak to users. And we can't spell "existence" either.

SAT-3 cable repair vessel still on-site running cable repairs. Still no ETR as yet. A huge thanks for everyone's patience

Wish we could bring more updates to the table guys. Or even better an ETR.
None as yet unfortunately, I can tell you though that we've been working non-stop on securing additional capacity for our fail-over links in an effort to minimise the impact.
No further updates are expected for tonight, should have some news by tomorrow.

Good morning everyone.
The SAT-3 repair ship has detected and cut out the fault. Repair efforts are continuing. More info to follow when available.

We've noted a drastic improvement on international capacity as well as latency. An official update will follow once we receive confirmation from our upstream providers.

No official word of a proper resolution just yet, so the last update still stands.
Our upstream providers and engineers are still monitoring traffic slowly. My home connection is looking much better, haven't tried gaming yet so I've only noticed NNTP being a bit slower than usual.

As soon as feedback lands in my inbox I'll have it posted up.
What a weekend....

Evening all.
Got some good news :) SAT-3 capacity is back up and running at 100%

Our upstream providers are still monitoring the situation though, so we'll keep this as a listed "outage" for the moment. I'm sure by tomorrow things will return to normal. Further tweaks or repairs may still take place until further notified.
On that note, I'm off to sleep - will post up some feedback tomorrow morning.

Thanks again for everyones patience!

I feel bad that WAJeff is the only one posing, so I will drop in with a question... :D

I noticed that the MTN Uncapped Lite package we are running at home was pretty much dead as well, since friday. 3G on my iPhone (also MTN) was working just fine... but the Uncapped, nada.

So my question is, were MTN Uncapped accounts also affected?

Big thanks to @WAJeff! Pitty I couldn't have gotten this kind of feedback from my ISP.

Absolute pleasure :D
Traffic is still running smoothly, just waiting for the final "it's resolved" words from our upstream guys and we can close this one off for good!

Hi All,

We can confirm that the cable has been restored and is up and running as per normal.

Unfortunately maintenance will continue to be done on the Europe - India gateways between Portugal and Gibraltar. This is expected to be completed on the 5th July 2012.

We'll be monitoring the cable extremely closely and inform everyone of any issues as they arise.

Is anyone else still having latency issues with international websites?

Everything seems to be working 100% for me, on Afrihost and WebAfrica. You might want to try restarting your modem if you are still having issues - reset you connection and remove any cached information.

Thanks for the advice Saajid but I'm actually running a Telkom Metrolan at the office. I was affected by the SAT3 outage over the weekend and things seemed to be alright this morning, but most of the afternoon all international traffic has pretty much ground to a halt. I just thought I'd ask if anyone was still having issues on the DSL side as we were both affected by the same outage on Friday. My home DSL connection on Mweb is fine but I didn't even notice a problem over the weekend.

http://www.twitch.tv/itshafu page still does not work stream video on WA however does on my Afrihost. This worked on Afrihost the whole weekend and last worked on WA before the sat-3 problems. Can this be investigated.

We can definitely get this looked into. Please PM your client code and I can escalate this to our ADSL Support.
