ADSL pricing comparison

The point is that Telkom has no excuse, looking at Australia and New Zealand's pricing. They, too, are basically in the middle of nowhere and look at how much cheaper their pricing is! Absolute nonsense on Telkom's part.

Sad to tell you this but at moment I have 50mbit uncapped for R324 from Virgin here in the UK.

Then again, 2mbit uncapped here is free with most things, your mobile contract, tv, satellite, swear you can buy a dishwasher and they'll throw in free broadband...

Only once you have seen / used real broadband do you realise how useless South Africa's is. Having 4mbit at home (Umhlanga) felt like a 384 line over here with the latency etc.

8ms ping to Google vs something in the 400 / 500's, SHOCKING!

:(

ICASA

:erm: does anybody really think it is going to change - ICASA has it's own agenda.

Maybe instead of just complaining, some bright spark (with money ) should start a class-action lawsuit agains ICASA - is it afterall not their "mission" to protect the public.

I would love some really serious bandwith

now why would someone want a 60GB or uncapped account?
what could you possibly download that is personal, or browse 60GB worth of sites.

i think that having a 3GB cap is somehow slowing down the process of pirating.

Common' i'm not the only one here that has downloaded movies or mp3's.

What could you possibly do with 60GB or uncapped a month that is actually legal? Games, video conference maybe....what else out there would require such huge demand for data?

This just proves what we have all for some time now. We are being FLEECED by T#%$@m! But what makes it worse is the fact that our government has idly allowed them to continue their profiteering.

I had hoped that the new president would have been far more proactive in sorting out this sort of daylight robbery. Maybe there is still hope.

Anyway, 0.375 Mbps, how come I only get 0.0395 Mbps?

When the competition comes, I will be moving on, T#%$@m!

The Rest of the World understands how important e-commerce is.

Only in South Africa is Mickey Mouse holding the entire Country to ransom.

And this in a global recession, nogal.

The ANC bigwigs who control Telkom obviously believe that their profits take perogative over the wellbeing of the Nation.

With that in mind, there should have been an additional column for real download/upload speed? :D

I do agree 60 Gig is maybe an overkill, but remember cap is determined by bytes downloaded as well as uploaded, so

Online Gaming accounts, The whole family doing Facebook / youtube uploads, research, maybe a lot of emails with clients (sending and receiving cv's in either pdf or word format). This is one of the advantages / disadvantages of having a home office.

All this can add up - I easily use 10Gigs a month, and sometimes run out. I do not download music or movies - then 10Gig would not be enough.

Just goes to show you that DarrylH don't know what the **** he is talking about. Has he heard of Video streaming legally which requires alot of bandwith never mind speed. He probably got someone else to post this comment as he's to busy being a FAT CAT.

Online backup: Virgin provide us with 50gb worth of space to backup any files.

Photo Sharing and sending HD videos to family / friends of holidays, travel etc.

well now, maybe shawn T & odracir, should use some of thier cap and go a learn a little and learn to read....

What coudl you possible do with 60GB or uncapped a month that is actually legal?
some clever ppl here have answered my question. (online backups, legal video streaming, HD video sharing and so on and on)

So yes, SOHO (that's small office, Home office - for Shawn T and odracir) would require more.

It's not really your business what I do with my bandwidth is it? You're probably one of the suckers living with a 10MB account thinking you have 'broadband'. That may be fine for you, however some people make a living off the 'net. I'll admit I only browse, log into the office via VPN during most days & online gaming alone takes up to 50MB per hour of play. Oh yeah, my kids use the net for most of their school projects.

Your only perceived use for the 'net is watching porn. How sad.
Go preach somewhere else you nanny.

Good points, the comparison is flawed at best.

go back to your cave... you don't belong in the information age :p

Webhosting , streaming (video and radio) , gaming , actually there are many many more options , we just have not experience it due to our limited bandwidth. In fact I would go as far as say we will only expereince real broadband when they lift the caps !!

One more thing guys , I dont think some of your answers to Darrylh is called for , no need for the profanity. I agree , silly question but lets keep it above the belt please.

Now please don't take this the wrong way as I am just trying to make a point.

My question to you in return would be this: What business is it of yours or anybody else what I do with my broadband connection?

Not giving me what I want simply because you don't think I need it is a silly bloody reason. Even worse would be if government agrees with you and don't put pressure on companies to compete for cheaper and cheaper bandwidth delivery...

:)

There are tons of things one can do with more bandwidth, GROWING THE ECONOMY is just one! :D

I give a flying hoot about what hampers or doesn't hamper piracy. Solving the piracy issue is independent from the delivery method. Should we stop international travel because drug dealers distribute their goods on them?

One could download games from Steam/Impulse/something similar without doubling the the price of the game. For that matter one can actually afford to download game demos. One would not be forced to first check the state of ones cap before downloading drivers or a copy of Windows 7 or Linux (both of which is legal). One could browse game sites without sweating and biting ones nails, because all new (official) game sites have the disturbing habit of including imbedded videos, flash and whatnot.

I for one love browsing YouTube. Search Bryan Habana, Sebastian Chabal crash tackles, Allan Donald vs Mike Atherton and a mirriad of other sporting videos and see how much bandwidth you can use.
