ADSL Stellenbosch issues!

Phloop, what is your ADSL stats like? I suppose you are connected at 2048kbps down, 512kbps up with good SNR margins?
Also, in what suburb are you? Perhaps in the upper side of Die Boord?

Secondly, perhaps just try a different ISP account to rule out shaping.

Here are my OpenWeb 4Mbps uncapped results for 03:00 in the morning on a 4Mbps ADSL line with good ADSL stats:

And here are my Telkom guest account's results:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 1942 kbps (242.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 401 kbps (50.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 254 ms
27 March 2014 03:05:57 AM
* The latency is often incorrectly measured (possibly due to my MikroTik router's shaping)

YUSSSS!

Okay, so I walked down to my local friendly Telkom office and had the following conversation:

Me: "So I'm only getting 50kb/s max."
Telkom Dude: "Joh, bra. That's definitely buggered up!"

They called their tech team and fiddled with the settings on their side.

Tah-dah!

Thanks, Pada. I was worried that it was the same for everyone around here but your post let me know something was seriously not right.

That's still not your full line speed if you have a 2mb line. You should get around 220kb/s.

Here is a speed test now on my 4mb line

Basicly the same

@alternate:
I received an SMS this morning from Telkom stating that my problem was fixed.

So I did a speed test (~ 10:00 AM) and also got around 1.2Mbps, which is slighly better (double the speed of a few days ago), but its still nowhere near where it should be.

I spoke to @TelkomZA today so I will see what they say. I hope on the 4th of April everything just suddenly works correctly. :D

This is so weird. I'm getting absolute full line speed at the moment. Usually this time of the morning it's already down to 50%.

Hopefully it's a sign that either it's being fixed or that we'll get decent speeds as the students go home for holiday this week.

Telkom moved my line to a different DSLAM this morning! Now its back to 4Mbps.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 3546 kbps (443.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 375 kbps (46.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 33 ms
3/28/2014 10:48:55 AM

Now I wish they can just get rid of that other DSLAM.

I've now also noticed that the "new" DSLAM that my line has been moved to supports ADSL2+:

Mode: ADSL2+

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 14.8 17.8
Attenuation (dB): 38.0 18.2
Output Power (dBm): 2.9 0.0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 13696 856
Rate (Kbps): 4096 507

Other than that my stats looks the same...

I wonder if their upgrade before the 4th of April would simply involve upgrading that broken/slow DSLAM.

It may otherwise be worth while to push to get your line moved to another DSLAM like I did. I'm not sure who was involved from Telkom's side to get it done. I've basically asked the Telkom technicians and also explicitly asked the 10210 Telkom operator to move my line to another DSLAM.

Are you guys still having issues?

Like my friends who are also in Die Boord, who were having issues, are all saying that they're getting fast download speeds again, decent latencies and no packet loss.

My speeds are faster than usual (currently downloading at full speed) but I'm definitely still getting congestion. It was running half speed again most of yesterday.

It seems to start out very good in the mornings, then gradually slows down as the day progresses.

Edit: 9:52 AM, 2/3rds of the speed already.

My line's been maxing out since Monday and doesn't seem to have slowed down since. I wonder if they moved me to another exchange or something?

I see there's another thread in ADSL Discussions of a guy complaining of slow speeds, so maybe they're moving complainers to new DSLAMs or exchanges and moving other people to the borked rubbish.

Zewp:
What line speed do you have and what ISP account?

What happens if you do a speedtest with the Telkom guest account like 10:00 or 17:00 in the day?

Like when I do a speedtest with my OpenWeb 4Mbps GamersKing uncapped account during the day, I get like 1-2Mbps when their network is "busy", but I get 3.4Mbps 100% of the time after hours ever since they moved my line to a different DSLAM/exchange. When I test with the Telkom guest account, I can actually get 3.4Mbps during office hours too.

I've never tried with a Telkom guest account, but I have 2mb Openweb Gold on a 2mb line. It's currently downloading at 190kb/s, which is great for business hours. Up until last week the best I could get during the day was 60kb/s and sometimes as high as 100kb/s after hours. This happened on both my Openweb Gold and Mweb Capped accounts.

I don't know if it's because all the students are on holiday this week, but something has definitely changed. I'll wait and see what happens when all the students are back next week.

My line is being quite unpredictable, some nights it's smooth sailing at close to line speed with expected latencies, and on another night it will jump between 100-300ms every few seconds. Usually comes right after 10ish. Tomorrow (4 April) is apparently the earliest we can expect it to be properly resolved...

As I said a couple of days ago, I received an email last week Thursday from Telkom Social Networks staff, stating :
"....I’ve been advised that congestion relief is estimated for 4 April....."

I have been checking it since yesterday afternoon, and it stays at an average of about download 3.38 upload .40 with a ping of 77ms.

Using speedtest.net I get an even better ping and download as indicated below. This is for the Lynedoch area (just outside Stellenbosch) rural, but with a lot of guesthouses and wine estates who are all fairly busy online. I am hesitant to say, but it does seem as if the congestion which choked me to (often) below 1Mbps, has been resolved.
Even a speedtest.net test to New York gave me down : 3.35 Mb/s up :0.43 Mb/s ping :235 ms New York City, NY ~ 12500 km
My router indicates a linespeed of 4096, but my Telkom account indicates "Fastest" bundle - which I believe should be 4Mbps - 10Mbps - please correct me if I am wrong.
