Hey peeps

I have a telkom line at home - would love to get Netflix soon. Would having an ADSL Afrihost package of 100 Gigs per month ( R 99) be enough for Netflix? I am on a tight budget and therefore cannot afford to have an uncapped package.

Thanks
Nadia

120Gb cap works fine for me

Stream Netflix 2 - 3 hours a night and then more hours on week-ends. I'm the only person in the house so no one else uses any bandwidth

Personally I use about 150GB a month. However GF is at home during the day so if it was just for after business hours use I think that I would use closer to 100GB

Streaming will never be shaped on our Shaped Capped accounts. :) I would start off with the 100GB per month, you can always upgrade during the month if it isn't enough data.

I have the shaped 100GB capped package from Afrihost on a 10Mbps ADSL line. I signed up for Netflix and Showmax free trials on the weekend. Showmax streaming quality was so bad that I cancelled the service immediately. It was completely unwatchable.

I then decided to try out Netflix and on Saturday and Sunday afternoon I was able to stream everything on my LG 4K smart TV perfectly in full HD, no sweat. I didn't stream anything again until last night at around 9pm when it all went pear shaped. Whatever I tried to start streaming on Netflix started playing and then after about 30 seconds it would just freeze. A short while after that I would get an on screen message telling me that they couldn't send me the content.

I got on the Netflix support chat and we went through a variety of tests. The guy helping me was satisfied that the download speeds I was getting were fine (average 9Mbps) using fast.com as the bench. We reset everything from the TV to the router and still couldn't get stuff to play on any of my (many) devices.

The only thing that I can think might be causing this is some kind of shaping from Afrihost, yet you say this isn't the case. What could be causing this? I have no issues streaming from Youtube on this LG Smart TV.

I have been using Afrihost for just over a month now. and can say that it is the worst experience I have had with an ISP.

Their Capped accounts are shaped to **** during evening hours. Do not believe this unshaped capped accounts nonsense they will try to sell you LIES.
Before Afrihost I was using CrystalWeb for about 3 years. in the last few months Crystal Web performance has also been on the slide. Crystal despite some issues is however streets ahead of Afrihost.
This weekend I did try Vox and I must say i was very impressed with the quality of service I received from them. based on my experience over the last month I would recommend a Vox Capped account.

Afrihost you really need to sort yourselves out.
1) feedback on any issue is non-existent.
2) shaping of capped accounts is bull****.
3) your phone lines are a minimum of a 20 minute wait.
4) your so called online support does not exist. I have NEVER in a month been able to get hold of someone. always leave a mail and we will get back to you.
5) support via these forums is no better that your other channels.

my experience with TELKOM is better that with Afrihost.
That says a lot.

Afrihost has 2 different called accounts. Shaped and unshaped .

I have an unshaped account and have no issues at all.

Streaming is definitely prioritized on our Capped accounts. If Youtube is running well then by all accounts Netflix should be running as well.

Which DNS are you using on your Modem?

Are you on a Shaped or Unshaped Capped account?
