This might be a really dumb question... But I am a little confused as to what I need and what I don't need.

I recently moved into a new house and am really interested in Afrihost ADSL. Now I noticed there already is a telkom line installed, so I contacted the owner, and he informed me that the line is there, but it is not active anymore.

So I called Afrihost and they let me know that I need a Telkom number on order to install ADSL.

I called Telkom to apply for a new number, and they told me that I need to go on a plan basically. It will cost me +-R170 per month, and will basically include a voice line, but that is all.

Do I need this in order to install Afrihost, because I see they have bundles which include Line rentals.

Do I really need all of these things? In other words, a Telkom voice line and the Afrihost Data and Line rental?

Hope Im making sense and that someone can help explaining it to me?

1. Get your adsl from Telkom.
2. AFTER your adsl is installed contact Arrihost.

You need a Voice line from Telkom, this is an unavoidable requirement for ADSL
So first thing is to get telkom to install the voice line ( you can install the ADSL line portion below at the same time usually )
Next item on the list is the ADSL line portion ( this can either be bolted onto your Telkom Bill or be Bundled with your ADSL Provider - there are pros and cons to both )
Then lastly is the ADSL Data ( which as per above can be bundled or unbundled )

Your telephone line and ADSL will have the same number. You pay Telkom a separate amount for the ADSL line.
When you put it in, find out what the sync rate is - ie 4 Mbps or 10Mbps. You will need this for the package from AH.
You need a modem router that plugs into that line.

edit - I am sure if you PM any of the respondents here incl myself you will get the help you need.

Greetings, welcome to MyBB :)

The guys above have pretty much covered everything already, just to sum up though.
You do need a Telkom voice line in order for us to order DSL, Even if you don't use the landline you'll still need to pay Telkom their month fee and voice line rental.

If you take a bundled package from us we'll cover the data and DSL line rental portions :)
Shout if you have any other questions!

Thanks

Awesome... Thanks for the replies above.

Hopefully Telkom will be able to come and install the line asap.

Keep us posted!
Once Telkom have the line installed drop us a line - we can have the DSL section of the line installed in about 14 days or so, sometimes quicker :)

This is the thread I was looking for after consulting the afrihost website yesterday and visiting a telkom store today to apply for a new line. I didn't actually apply, just got the forms because I'm not sure what to apply for.
After reading this thread I have more questions than answers.

The one thing I and everybody else do understand is that the Telkom line is a matter between yourself and Telkom. It is the infra-structure and will always be billed to you by Telkom.

According to this afrihost link can take care of the DSL part of your line. Afrihost also charges cheaper for the ADSL-line than Telkom does. For example, on the 4mb line you pay R 279 to Afrihost or R 299 to Telkom. This is also confusing.

Chevron said:

PsyWolf said there are pros and cons, but does not elaborate ?

TEXTILE GUY said When you put it in, find out what the sync rate is - ie 4 Mbps or 10Mbps. You will need this for the package from AH. <-- Now I wonder if there isn't something else I also misunderstand because I thought you ORDER the line speed (Sync rate ?) and pay for it accordingly. ( 4mb = R299 )

And then AfriGuy said:
You do need a Telkom voice line in order for us to order DSL,
Chevron said otherwise...??? Who orders the DSL capability of the line ? Me or Afrihost ?

If you take a bundled package from us we'll cover the data and DSL line rental portions. <-- Explain pls

Can someone please clear up the confusion in plain language, AfriGuy can you do it, please ?

I am sure most people just want to understand the deals they get into, and all the options can cause confusion.

Thanks in advance.

Additional Note: Telkom website says its R 157 for a line, Telkom shop said it R 176. ???
from this link
Once off installation fee for line is R 700.14.

What will it cost?

Installation fees:
Line rental installation: R551.69
ADSL installation fee: R747.51 (self installation option available)
Monthly rental fees:
Line rental: R157.00
ADSL rental: R 299.00

Read the Afrihost threads beofre parting with your money. We're seeing some severe problems and lots of false promises.
Cannot recommend this ISP at this time....

Can you elaborate pls.

AfriHost won the award for Best ISP three years in a row . What was your experience with them ?.

I spoke to a guy today who has been with then for years, and he recommended them.

So, please elaborate.

The way I understand it

Ok, based on my conversation with Telkom today and the replies to my post, this is how I understand it:

Step 1:
Get a Telkom Voice line. You need a Telkom number and subscription. They are currently running a promotion for some weekend thing, where it costs R175. The installation is free but you have to pay a R700 deposit. I will need to get some more info regarding this, but sounds like you get it back after a couple of payments.

There is a different subscription, the one you talked about, that costs R150 or something like that. They told me however that a installation fee of R500 is then required.

Step 2:
You will now have a Telkom voice line, but not a data line.

I am gonna go for a 4mb line, but will do the data line rental through AH along with the data of course. The one I'm gonna go for is the capped 50gb bundle. This will be about R400.

For this option I will then pay AH R400 for 50gb along with the 4meg data line. I will then also pay Telkom R175 for the number, subscription and voice line. I will probably never use this, but it doesn't look like I have another option.

I hope I understand it correctly now??

Not sure what the pros and cons are of doing the data line rental through AH though?? I would rather support then than Telkom!!

Well, If you go with a bundled ADSL (Were you pay your ISP for Line rental and the account) your ISP pays Telkom on their said just to make it easier for you, so its the same thing.

I recommend you get a 4meg uncapped bundled account from AH which would cost R597pm + your voice line account (R175)

And you are in the northern region of South Africa which is not affected by the current network problem.

What I would like to see from AfriGuy is something like this:

The Process:
1. you. user do this
2. We. AH do that.

The bill :
1. You pay Telkom for "SERVICE aaa" , "AMOUNT bbb"
2. You pay AfriHost for "SERVICE xxx", "AMOUNT zzz"
3. Here is your total for everything combined per month: R abc

To get that answer is a f_u_cking mission.

Keep it Simple.

Thanks for raising this - it's a question that comes up often.

You definitely need a voice line in order to get DSL service - this is a Telkom requirement. Many ISPs and broadband users have called for a change in this policy - but alas, Telkom sets the rules.

Around R170 is about right for a basic voice plan - maybe look at the Closer package because you generally don't have to pay the R600+ installation fee on those packages. Also, if you're going to apply directly to Telkom for DSL, opt for self-install and then you also avoid an additional R700 installation fee from Telkom. If we install your DSL (via Telkom) we don't charge you any installation fees though.

If you need more info or advice, please drop me a PM :)

PsyWolf said there are pros and cons, but does not elaborate ?

Yes there are pros and cons to both, indicating there is no clear cut best option - it's up to the user to choose
As to what the pros and cons are,if anybody asks what they are they'll get the answer
