Afrihost ADSL woes continue

I'll personally be staying with them for now on the basis that I think it's too soon to say that Afrihost is no longer a good ISP based on some difficulties they are

I'm staying with them for now because they are R200 cheaper for me than any other ISP (4Mb uncapped). If pricing was similar I would just switch, but they have sucked me in with long term customer discounts.

If these problems continue then I will be switching, but for now I believe that these are just teething problems.

Yes it is crap for customers and we should never have to deal with this, but I am willing to wait it out for a little bit longer.

Has anyone else noticed that they only seem to have issues during Steam sales?! :)

Another ISP you can also look at is Kawuleza Connect, we don't shape our packages, also offer a 5day free trial to test our service before joining

* R879-00 pm for 4M uncapped
* R1250 installation cost
* Take that on a contract and the installation cost is even more
* Wireless.....

You can keep it, thanks but not thanks.

Very aggravating that the Network Status page showed everything was fully operational last night, when it clearly wasn't. :sick:

Really? I saw a notification on their site from 14:30 and it was on their until after midnight?

We won't deny that we've had more than our fair share of issues. Some of them, like yesterday's issue (which probably prompted the article) were well and truly out of our control. Others we maybe could have done better, and we are quickly getting up to speed on how things should be done to deliver the best benefit to our clients.

Just to respond to some general comments - we're not about greed. We moved networks motivated by what we could do for our clients. It just made sense for us to take the next logical step towards more control over our own network & for us to have control over our capacity. Since we've been bogged down with technical issues, we haven't had much time to focus on everything else, but once we've achieved the stable performance we expect (which should be soon), we plan on introducing more savings and awesome products - which we could not have achieved if we had not moved to MTN.

Yes Flippy, but the little green light saying 'network fully operational' should change colour when there is an issue. It didn't. :(

AfriMan, why did it take so long to "fix" the issue? Surely there's a SLA that dictates how these sorts of issues are handled and what the acceptable repair turnaround times are? I'm new client on a business ADSL acc, and so far I've pretty dissapointed. The lack of redundancy is a major concern.

Noted that as well. I visited Hetzner's network status page, which indicated problems on MTN's network. AfriMan, won't AH consider being a bit more proactive with business adsl customers and send an email/sms when serious network issues occur, cause the network status good on the website isn't accurate.

I really do feel for Afrihost.

I understand that it's very annoying when you want to do what you need to do with a connection you're paying for, but Afrihost is trying to do in a very short space of time what other ISPs have had years to do.

Not that I claim to be an expert, but I know that it's possible that there's a certain amount of flexibility that you need as you grow that they might not have had at IS. It's possible that the move was made in order to give them freedom to innovate.

I'll personally be staying with them for now on the basis that I think it's too soon to say that Afrihost is no longer a good ISP based on some difficulties they are having. Perhaps I'm just lucky but my service hasn't been nearly as bad as others have described. Also, I love the company's attitude and culture. I like that they seem to always be looking for ways to add more value to their customers (in a win/win kind of way, which is fundamental to running a profitable business).

Just in case anyone is wondering: I have no connection with Afrihost other than being a customer. :)

I will stay as well, but first Sunday without internet, now again serious speed issues ; some time or another my patience will be tested ...............

I'm giving them till end of December to shape up, if I have issues through December I'm jumping to mwebs deal.

Problem No.1, afrihost moved bandwidth to MTN.

D
+1
Did Afrihost's or MTN's router in London fail?

Don't understand why Afrihost did not wait for MTN to acquire a Cape Town IPC link and redundant international capacity before moving over all their clients from IS.
It did seem a little bit too much of a leap of faith and MTN seem to not have the best rep.

We use MTN Business and that Network Notice" that cbrunsdonza is talking about happens almost weekly. All you see is STM 4 links to london tealacity are down and the carrier is attending.

We are moving away from them when our contract expires.

So Afrihost good luck this has happened for the last 4 years with them what is going to change now?

Wow, that is pretty crazy!?!

You would have thought the JSE would have been aware of these issues??

im sticking with afrihost nevermind this small snag.

Hopefully they will shed themselves of the hoards of crybabies they seem to have collected over the last few months.

I believe in supporting the movers and shakers. The only reason (in my mind) why they moved to MTN, is to allow afrihost with better flexibility on how to manage and market their products.

If not for Afrihost the ISP ring will lack one of the biggest competitors for low prices.

Hope they fix the problems soon and continue with providing a great service

speed and the sunday issues suck, but before this i never had one complaint....and I would never go back to MWEB's site vs AH clientzone

I'm a 6140/640 line capped user who got one of the 10+1GB accounts for R99 from Afrihost when they were offering them. My usage varies between those 11 gigs and about 25 gigs in a busy month, so I don't use a lot of data. With the two-fer top-ups at R29 the most I am spending in any month is about R273.

Like everyone else I do bitch a lot when my connection goes awry or isn't available. Yesterday I was literally hovering the cursor over the cancel link in the ACP when I had a look at my options with other ISP's. It doesn't make financial sense for me to cancel right now.

What I have decided to do is keep the R99 account and spend the other money with Web Africa's 10GB for R149 offer. This way I can switch accounts should either network have issues and still keep my costs pretty low, without sacrificing my line speed by opting for an uncapped account.

I do hope Afrihost can sort out their network issues soon. The value is there, they just need to get the support right.

The design of the link to London is confusing. The router failed not the STM-4.
That implies a single point of failure with a router that cannot provide link protection or processing failover and is unstable.

I have had nothing short of spectacular service from Afrihost and they sent me a goodies bundle which arrived with perfect timing on my birthday so all and all I am a fan. My speeds haven't dropped since the move over and have actually improved. Afrihosts big plus point for me is that their pricing is damn good and their service doesn't suffer as a result. Yesterday my brother in law repaired his line and it went on the blink - preventing him from accessing at all. I tried to repair it from my side (logging into clientzone for the first time to the new one) and it also failed, phoned support and the guy tried twice and failed, he logged a fault and 3 minutes later the line was working. This was a single user problem that probably rested with Telkom happening while Afrihost had its own other **** to deal with and it got fixed in one phone call.

I suspect that the Cape Town issue hasn't been completely brought in line and that the MTN network has less capacity internationally than what was anticipated - basically the local/international mix has shifted - and this means degraded performance for newsgroup users who have subscriptions on international services. Of course I strongly suspect that the extra national capacity will ultimately allow for various products and services. Apart from the teething problems - primarily around Cape Town IPC - I haven't seen complaints about the Afrigamer products and suspect that the move over to MTN benefits that range (either that or the gamers are still trying to figure out how to type coherent paragraphs :)).

What I'd like to see some feedback on is whether the amazingly priced business ADSL products are performing because lets face it since the move they have slashed that line.

I cancelled 6 Business Uncapped accounts as my clients kept complaining about slow speed and high latency, replaced them all with MWeb Uncapped and clients noticed an immediate improvement in speed and latency.

Greed covered in a sugar coated "we have your best interests at heart.

Cry babies??? When your businesses bottom line is seriously affected by their stubborn insistence on going with MTN then it's not simply being a cry baby. I lost a day of production yesterday and that was costly.

No, they don't need to get the support right. They need to get the network right and they will not do this through MTN. I can assure you that.
