Can anyone tell me why authentication is so slow on Afrihost?

It takes about 40-50 seconds on Afrihost for my account to authenticate, while on other ISP's it's less than 10 seconds. This has consistently always been the case, but there were bigger problems to be solved in the past. Now that those are seemingly sorted, this would be nice to figure out as well.

Thanks.

I think it depends on your area and how far your traffic has to travel to our radius server. For me, being in JHB where we have a radius, it's probably between 10 and 20 seconds most of the time, which is about the same for other ISPs as far as I can tell.

So that can cause authentication to take 40 seconds longer? That sounds a bit far-fetched... How far is the nearest one from Centurion?

You would probably be routing to the radius cluster in Joburg.

It also depends on the routing on the Telkom network and the latency on your line and exchange.

It's always like this, whether my line is performing optimally(like now) or has gone to the dogs.

Maybe you guys could do an in-depth explanation for the sake of us normal people as to how this authentication process works exactly, and how it's different from information travelling from here to London in 0.2 seconds on the same line/system. I think that will be immensely interesting.

40 seconds to get across the country? That is insane.

Remember it depends on your routing via your router, local DSLAM exchange, Telkom's BRAS in the area and then to our radius server. Once you're authenticated, you can't really compare it to pings to a server.

It can also be affected by the number of authentications being received at any point in time. For example, immediately after an outage, authentication may take longer because of the volume of authentication requests.

Your can't really compare authentication to a ping. One is simply a packet being dropped, the other is a complete security handshake. And again, it depends on the person, their config, their exchange, etc. Just like nobody can get the exact same ping to a server, it will vary from user to user.

An in-depth explanation would still be nice, maybe some pictures, as the above is not actually an acceptable answer as to why 50km would take 40 seconds longer than 1km in the connectivity world.

And you can disregard outages and volumes, as this ALWAYS happens, regardless of date or time, even 2AM. I have had to do enough re-authentications on my Afrihost account to know that this isn't the exception, but the rule.

Like I said, it will vary from user to user. My authentication test definitely don't take as long as that. I've never experienced it to be as long as 40 seconds.

I can also confirm it takes almost 1 minute to Authenticate with Afrihost,

Mweb is under a second, IS a little longer....

Question?

I want to downgrade my Bundle package (Data & Line).
What is the necessary step to follow?
Does the downgrade happen immediately or on the 1st of next month? (Cause this month already payed in full)

Please advise me the best way to do this.

Thanks.

Any downgrades will only take affect from the 1st day of the next month, a revised invoice will be issued with the corrected pricing, and we will submit the updated payment using your preferred payment details.

The sooner in the month you request the downgrade, the better obviously.

To complete the actual downgrade, you will just need to request it from the Clientzone, under the Connectivity option, then you will select the Edit Package option for the ADSL line and for your Business Uncapped acount.

I did the downgrade now. Both Line and Business Uncapped..
And already Afrihost is limiting me to the new speed, instead from the 1st lick you said??

That shouldn't be the case, could you PM me your DSL username that you've downgraded so I can have a look at this?

Do we have to ask questions to be eligible to win?
