I have business uncapped Afrihost. In general it is a good experience.

But, what does it mean if the latency is reasonable (18ms to 197.242.144.102 and 216ms to 8.8.8.8); SAIX speedtest local to Rosebank (from Durban) is about 3.5Mbs on a 4Mps line; but all international downloads are painfully slow (over 2 hours now to extract a mere 9Mb from a Microsoft update service to load a SQL server patch).

It has been like this most of today - rebooted router. Mac etc. Is this my setup, exchange congestion or something on the Afrihost/MTN link to international services. Mybroadband speedtest showing international downloads today are on average 300kps (always slower than uploads today). Rdio streaming has been practically useless since about 7:30am and I use this as an test to see if there is something awry.

But local speeds are fine. Where is the congestion - what does an increasingly frustrated business DSL user do? How to report this? Nothing appears on the main Afrihost site to indicate a problem; everything is "running like a bomb".

I don't have the inclination to go to the help desk and go through the painful diagnostic process that focuses on my line (which I think is OK), and I am forced to live from day to day in anticipation. Tomorrow it might be perfect, or not.

I'm not seeing any widespread issues on our side at the moment, but it is worrisome that you've had this sort of experience so far. Could I ask that you send me a PM with your ADSL username so that I can look into this from my side.

Telkom do have specialised units that can monitor your line over a 24 hour period for issues like this, especially intermittent connectivity. However, as far as congestion goes, that is also a regular report that receive on exchanges and their utilisation (separate from the percentage of ports available). But I guess the thing is they need to see what you are seeing in order to be convinced that there is an issue and the issue is what they think it is.

I don't think we'll ever get a tech to call you at 10pm though, but they can monitor overnight and call you the next day with feedback.

So it seems the issue popped up early today

It's just funny that they never tell you they can monitor it or anything. They just pitch up, do a test and say you need to lower the sync speed because 12db SNR isn't good enough  ... No jokes... That's what that idiot tech said in his "report" 2 weeks ago...

:wtf:

That's a very strange response to a fault... The resolution to these faults is so often dependent on the Tech investigating. Has the actual sync been dropped and has there been any improvement?

That's why I got so angry and irritated with them. Told them they WILL NOT lower the sync speed! They need to FIX the problem. The guy ADMITTED there is static/mechanical noise but no, lowering the sync speed is the solution:mad::confused: Almost every tech that comes out always says my SNR isn't good enough and suggests I lower the sync speed to raise SNR... Then I report it again, and a different tech fixes the actual problem.
Even with my 12dB SNR I NEVER get disconnects and it's even stable during HEAVY weather... My latency doesn't even jump during heavy storms if I already have a stable and good latency...

My SNR is now about 15dB but the latency issues still persist... They're just TOO lazy to investigate the exchange...:( 7 F*%$ing months with these latency issues now:crying:

Called them today, they now want to blame it on the cable connecting my router to the telephone jack [facepalm]

But just knowing now that they have measures in place to monitor the exchange overnight helps a lot! Glad I posted here!

I guess Vodacom and MTN is farking us over in the Estate I stay in. It was announced last week that we will soon have FTTH. And guess what happened to my line. Clockwork... 18H00 and it is as useless as calling AH call Centre.

So I think it is time to say cheers to AH. Getting my 2MB's worth, until this week. A global slowdown after 18H00. And that is the time I get most of my remote access work in.
And just for AH, this is the same as last night. Will report the line tomorrow. Hope that will fix something

I am having the same problem. Between 6 and about 10 each night my speeds drop drastically. I have been told it is congestion at the exchange. Getting real tired of this as well.

We're hoping the Telkom's new dynamic system will actually prevent these kind of issues. Yes, we won't necessarily get the maximum line sync, but instead of a constant back and forth on issues like this, the system will have set the sync, so the technicians will be forced to investigate properly and ensure they do thorough testing. Which is great for everyone. If the techs have more time to do this becuase faults decrease (right now they have lots of people logging multiple faults because they insist on high sync rates but their lines become intermittent or unstable). I know it may not seem like it, but I think there's a big win for everyone when the system is properly live and working as promised.

I'm not sure what the link to FTTH is here. Maybe I have missed an earlier post or something :(

Generally I'm seeing the network well within limits for performance. demand is high at times but shaping (on Uncapped accounts, not Business) has kept performance in line. When I tested my line last night I was getting pretty much line speed consistently between 6pm and about 9pm (until I ran out of torrents to test with).

It's definitely a reality that congested exchanges will exhibit this type of behaviour. We're not seeing a general issue like this. Remember that if our regional network (IPC) is congested, everyone in the entire region will experience the same symptoms, not just a few clients in a specific area.

Can you post any results from testing at the time?

Hi Afriman.
Will post results when it happens again. All the s*** started on 11 February - there was a definite decrease in my speed as from that day and my speeds have been wonky ever since. Apparently there is a fault on the exchange which is now causing congestion.
