Its not a "could". That is for a fact Google's DNS. No idea why you guys are using your ISP DNS anyway.

For reference Google's primary and secondary:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Yeah I know it's a Google DNS. They could be using the Google DNS as the safeguard to fall back onto. I use Afrihost DNS, because their email doesn't seem to work for me without it.

note the packet loss

the destination is irrelevant

Your second hop latency is extremely high, and packet loss seems to occur after the exchange, so I would guess the cause is either you line or you exchange. We don't usually see packet loss with mild congestion, so I am guessing this is more likely the line :(

Is Afrihost now using 8.8.4.4 as their automatic 2nd DNS? I have it set to automatic and this is what it configures to:
Preferred DNS Server: 196.7.7.7
Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4

If we serve that DNS to you while you are using the dynamic assignment setting, it means we may be having a problem on our DNS cluster and this is a temporary fix while we sort that out.

These are the best results I've got in the last 2 hours :/
Cape Town, Plumstead
8Mb/s Business Uncapped on a 7Mb/s line

SNR and Attenuation are both perfect. I'll try out google DNS and see if it helps
Edit: Google DNS not helping... oh well

Ping to a remote server is going to give you intermittent results. Especially if it's to somewhere that has irregular routing unlike a server in the UK or the US.

In your later post you say other tests time out, so I don't think the tests themselves can tell us much as basic troubleshooting on your line :(

Because every close server timed out, so after 50+ retries it was the only pingtest that actually WORKED :/

Speed and ping seem to have been fixed but I'm getting some packet loss

Definitely seems to suggests it's not a line issue but possible an intermittent line or exchange problem.

please have a look at this also,

Local speedtest

some random EU site speedtest,

more than enough bandwidth to stream lets say 480p?

youtube and twitchtv simply not getting more than 35kb/s

using an WA account it actually streams 480p at 90kb/s fine.

I tracert one of their servers:

I cant be the only one still struggling with twitch using afrihost business accounts

Seems like it's similar to previous tests that the issue is probably on your exchange. Latency is intermittent all over the place, but starting on your exchange :(

League of Legends for Afrihost lags like mad. WA is fine -.-

Pretty sure that EASSy is the problem

We'd need to see comparative traceroutes to see if there is additional latency on EASSy compared to WACS or Seacom.

Can you post one so I can have a quick look?

Google's DNS can sometimes have a negative effect on lookup speeds, after all hey definitely see a lot more traffic than our DNS cluster. We generally find that our DNS is the best performance option, and people mostly use Google DNS to bypass geolocation restrictions.

Here is an example of how screwed the network gets when uploading:

Anyone know a way how to prevent this other than QoS (tried a few times with QoS to no avail)?

I haven't tried to work with QoS in that respect. With such limited upload in the first place (I think MyBB recently published an article about this) you are pretty limited either way.

I found that Mobile Data generally gives you great upload speeds, even on 3G. On LTE they are pretty excellent. Might be an option for those emergencies that really require a faster upload capacity.

cool ill march back to Telkom via Afrihost again, been a constant struggle however im thinking its all due to the exchange/dslam, such a nightmare

Good luck!

These line issues can be painful, but Telkom are getting really good at resolving this permanently and in good time. Let's hope they can do this for you :)

Also telkom was at my residence Saterday, moved my port over to a new one,

Line stats is looking pretty good, so it remains an issue with either the DSLAM itself, the Exchange or the ATM switch not having enough bandwidth,

what would the best course of action be to have them look at it? I remember at my previous residence I had similar issues until a technician told me it basically comes down to congestion, they upgraded to MSAN and after it was simply amazing. Does Afrihost get information regarding such upgrades? or is there a public place to ask or see if these types of network changes is planned / happening?

I'm afraid not, the upgrade timelines and planning projects isn't information that Telkom share, not even to wholesalers :(

Why is the ping/latency to the Cape Town test so high recently

Last Result:
Download Speed: 7868 kbps (983.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 663 kbps (82.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 48 ms
Monday, 26 January 2015 23:19

This used to be around 15ms?

Nothing has changed on our side, we're still using the same routing etc. What are your DNS settings?
