I think you're speculating very broadly here. I'm not sure the discount figure you're mentioning is realistic, but the difference between 1Gbps and 3Gbps is a few million rand, not to mention that we have 3 IPC locations/installations. So I think it's best that we leave those decisions to the guys who have all the info from Telkom and also all the financial and technical data to make those decisions :(

Speed tests are fine, as they usually are. Youtube is streaming like rubbish, as is Udemy and SuperSport.

What's your latency like?
Maybe give this a shot and see if it helps anything along.

Find "Experimental QUIC protocol."
Set it to "Disabled" instead of "Default"

Boom, Google services working again. This was driving me nuts the past few days, and appears to be related to Google switching this protocol on for their services and having it enabled by default in Chrome. Not sure what the benefit is supposed to be, but clearly something's buggy with it right now and disabling it has no negative effects.

Internet dead here??? Mweb account seems to be working.

Edit: Seems DNS 196.7.7.7 & 196.7.8.9 are offline from here, switched to Google DNS and back to normal (except for the latency problem)

Can't spot any issues in the area or with our DNS servers.
 
Hmm, just got back from a client. And spotted that the connection dropped this morning round 2 am, I restarted the router, went out to a client, got back and behold. Internet disconnected again. The lights show connection, but 0 traffic and my linux that I needed this morning still nowhere close to completion.

Any idea on what can cause the connection. I see the wind is rather pushing out there. Might that cause a problem? Please let me know as I have a MacBook Pro that I need to update and 3 iOS devices that I need to get on iOS 8.4 for Beta Testing.

A line drop can happen for multiple reasons :( Drop me a PM with the DSL line number/ username and I can check the cause for you.

Supersport has always been poor on the Afrihost network, complained about this for months a few months back. Luckily I don't have a Explorer decoder, so I lost the ability to watch streaming sport on Supersport, so no loss. There are other ways to view sport online.

There are also issues with TwitchTV on Afrihost, barely works, and never been fixed.

I usually don't have issues streaming Supersport though. On 8Mbps.
 
AH, quick question, on a 4 meg line, what quality should I be able to get on YouTube without buffering?
And also, Google play updates seem to have the same problems as Apple updates lately - dog slow.

I can get 720p easily on my 4Mbps, that was until a few days ago on when I was buffering a heck of a lot on 240p, turns out there is a bit of an issue with Chrome and certain types of traffic, I switched out to Opera and my streaming was back at 720p.

Are all of your Google Play Store updates slow? Or is it only specific ones? How are your other downloads at the moment?

We've been doing a lot of work with MTN to get the routing for Twitch.tv better, have you been able to test recently?

Netflix claims that you need a minimum speed of 5Mbps for HD quality. But using a random Youtube video as an example, one of the Avengers trailers needs 2.64Mbps for 720p, if you just divide the size of the file by the video length and then convert into megabits.

All updates slow on Google play store.
Using the YouTube app on my phone at the moment to try stream - can't even get 480p.
Never, ever, as far as I can remember, gotten 720p.

In most cases Youtube videos should streaming for a local caching server, which does allow significantly improved results. Most users have a NetFlix US account, so the content is streaming directly from the US servers, which does affect performance just a bit.
