Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback - Part 3

Trying to download my Witcher 3 dlc, pathetic speeds, not trying a torrent version, well seeded, and speeds are 25% of the speed it should get. This file is only 4.25GB, and it will take e most of the day to download.

I see you also posted in the POC thread, I assume you switched accounts to do this test.

I've never been a fan of using torrents as a measure of performance, just too many variables, but we do know that throughput is poor at times on our production network due to demand.

Your latency seems mostly OK, though there are spikes that are concerning. We know that the production network is still showing signs of strain, and we're doing our best to improve performance while preserving low latency.

This will definitely be addresses finally when we change networks as Gian promised in his email.

You appear to be preserving latency at the cost of throughput which is driving up ingame latency, had to switch to a free account to do anything last night.

Its ****ing ridiculous that ingame messages take 30s to go through due to speeds never exceeding 100kb/s yet switching to Webafrica sees 0 problems.

Your latency preservation measures are clearly affecting other traffic that shouldn't be affected.

Hi

Torrents were my last option as regular downloading would not work.

If it's a choice between latency and throughput, we have to choose latency for streaming, gaming and browsing, that rely less on throughput. Ultimately, from a general network perspective, if there is contention for bandwidth, chances are that sacrificing latency would not yield much more throughput anyway.

When I've tested on the MTN network, throughput isn't great, but you should still get significant download speeds. You should definitely be getting good download most of the time on AfriGreen as well.

Can I test that file for you on my side as well?

With all due respect. How then am I able to download via NNTP at the exact time I'm getting next to no throughput on Gaming I get 7-800 kb/s. Browsing sucks pages take long to load, gaming sucks and streaming from iplayer gets the same 100kb/s that gaming is.

Feels like you guys are throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

If you are maxing throughput on NNTP, that is definitely affecting your overall performance. Would also indicate that you can get good throughput on your account.

Come on dude, I'm not downloading while doing other things. How ****ing stupid do you think I am.

That's the exact point I'm trying to make. YES I can get good throughput but you guys are throttling on signatures and are stuffing up what should be real-time services.

To be honest I'm tired of specifically your constant condescending tone. It comes across in almost all your messages. The other reps are helpful and polite. I don't think that I'm the only one that feels this way as its been raised before.

I think the general level of technical acumen here is far higher than what you would see coming in via regular support channels and it would behoove you to take cognizance of it.

Afrigreen has been slow for a while now, the default network currently is far better for me for general stuff. I cannot give you my GOG details, as none of the games are copy protected and I spent a lot of cash on games for my son. Unless you want to test the torrent version?

I think let's not take this to a personal level, I definitely don't have any intention of being condescending in any way. It's not clear in your message whether that was your method of testing and assuming one way or another is definitely not a good way to find solutions.

I really don't think it's helpful to make assumptions on behalf of the whole of mybroadband. I think I deal with a large cross-section of clients in various threads and PM's, and assuming everyone operates at the same level is definitely not the way to go.

We don't throttle protocols or traffic signature for business, that I can assure you. If you are able to get good throughput on type of traffic, there is no reason that you can't get it on a different protocol, unless there is overall contention and your throughput is intermittent. Ultimately, it would make no sense to allow throughput on P2P and NNTP (which uses the most bandwidth on the network) and then throttle realtime services, so that would not make sense and definitely not the conclusion to draw here.

I can definitely test the torrent version for you. Should I test on AfriGreen or MTN (or both)?

Hi

if you could test both, and then upload it to drop box for me so I can download it, that would help a lot :)

Looks to me like it's the file. Here's what I got:

Afrigreen

Afrihost (MTN)

Different ISP account

Here's a shot of my line running multiple torrents, just to show I can get better throughput.

Thanks for testing, still better results than what I get, will try again tonight.

Could be what the seeder is doing at different times. If people are seeding in the States, they should be less active or sleeping now, but our evening is maybe more active time for them. What's the difference, like 9 hours?
