Come on man. This is getting crazy...

Traces are fine as nothing exceeds 20ms but speeds are atrocious for a 4Mbps line and web pages aren't loading properly.

Speed tests of 1.1Mbps and 0.8Mbps are just not on.

Please Afriman/Afriguy. I upgraded to a business uncapped 1 meg account 2 days ago. I get home from work now and my torrents are going at 50-60kb/s . plenty seeders.

What is going on here ?

Torrents are a very unreliable measure of line throughput - unless you queue up mass amounts of torrents to saturate your line. Remember that you are seeding off someone else's upload speed. So they could be limiting their upload, they could be throttled or have a dodgy line or they could have only part of the file being seeded which has a big effect.

Are you guys shaping Youtube on these accounts all of a sudden? Speedtest and tracert results show normal figures, but since I got back 2 days ago, Youtube is unusable in the day.

Please advise.

Youtube seems pretty normal on my tests. What kind of throughput are you getting on your line?

I got tired of 6-8kbps downloads on normal uncapped, so I made the switch to business uncapped. That was around 3pm yesterday, and my downloads are still running at 6-8kbps. I'm hoping my business uncapped has yet to kick in? And that business uncapped is not this slow?

My client zone shows No Shaping under a Business Uncapped package. I switched temporarily to my 1GB Free Uncapped Account, and downloads were at 98kbps+ speeds, so it's not my line or exchange or anything.

Is there anything else I need to do to get the Business Uncapped working?

Edit: Forgot to mention it's a 1mb line

Hi Hush.

What you are describing sounds like my issue MAYBE. Do you have any bandwidth monitoring software on your pc like Bitmeter OS or similar? When you have these slow speeds and you check the monitoring does the speeds fluctuate or is it a flat rate at around 1mb? I am asking you to check this because I have a similar problem; my 4mb also sometimes performs like a 1mb however I have discovered this is due to my dslam using QoS and rate limiting all PPPoE connections to it to 1/4 of the line speed when high latency is detected. As such you WON'T see high pings on a tracert. It would look normal. I tested on multiple accounts and when Telkom then manually investigated they found the backhaul between the dslam's ESR and exchange WAS congested.

Does your graphs look like this?

That tipped me off that it is NOT an ISP problem. Looked like that on all 4mb accounts from 3 ISPs. If your speeds go and up and down then it could be something else. Just something to consider and also check out.

Afrihost capped account gets me nearly 3Mbps and an Mweb trial account performs really well so I doubt it's DSLAM related. It seems that contention on the business account is through the roof...

No its not the seeders. I had to switch to my Telkom capped account. My line ran at 110kb/s.
It says on your web sight, Unshaped , unmetered.

You should have kicked in by the latest at midnight last night. By the sounds of it you might not have - which is odd. Also depends on how you are measuring the speeds - on a torrent or on a speedtest or direct file download.

Drop me a PM so I can check that you are on the right policy :(

We'll run some more tests on our side - but as far as I can tell we're getting full throughput on Business :(

We do monitor contention very closely - as far as I can see on our testing, we're getting good throughput. We'd also see much higher latency if contention was too high, and possibly packet loss.

We'll keep running tests on this side to see if we can replicate this :(

Just got off the phone with you guys. Apparently even though It was showing im on a business account. I hadn't been switched over yet. And was still being shaped at a level 5 rating or something like that. A supervisor named vuzi had to sort it out for me.
So please go give him a big kiss for me :). Speeds finally going over 100ks/s.

If everything is dandy how is it that an account with Telkom is significantly outperforming the Afrihost one on the same line?

I have been getting speeds of between 0.6 - 1.8Mbps on Afrihost all day and don't even get me started on international... Streaming is completely broken. As in shattered!

Hopefully I have the same issue.

I tried to do some testing on Speedtest.net tonight. While my business uncapped is almost half the speed of the capped account, the capped account isn't exactly performing either...

Now what afrihost? It's 02:50 on a Friday night, and my DSL randomly stopped working.
But My router says it's connected. Even after a reboot, it reconnects immediately.
So then what? You assume I'm not working tonight and randomly decide to cut me off to do an upgrade? Seriously wtf? This is becoming worse than 3G!

Yip. Just off the line with Afrihost. Apparently I still had some shaping profile assigned which "should have" been changed when I switched to business uncapped...

They also gave me that story when I switched, but speeds are flying over here! Glad I made the switch:D

I'm pretty sure we're not doing any upgrades right now. I can't say why you're experiencing this - best drop me a PM so I can take a look. Sound like it may be a DNS issue - maybe a Telkom outage at the BRAS :(
