So I logged the following query with Afrihost for my Business DSL:

Recently switched to business DSL 4MB in the hopes of seeing
improvement of service from Afrihost. What speed should I be expecting
on average from the 4MB business DSL?

http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2386638327.png
http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2386641247.png

Did line test as well on clientzone:

ADSL Router Results (Telkom Exchange to Your Location)
Maximum Sync Rate
4096kbps

Current Downstream Sync
4096kbps

SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)
18.0dB

Attenuation
24.0dB

DSLAM Results (Your Location to Telkom Exchange)
Maximum Sync Rate
512kbps

Current Downstream Sync
512kbps

SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)
22.0dB

Attenuation
43.5dB
The amount of resistance on the line. A value below 55dB is good

I've been with Afrihost with bundled line and data service for a long
time now and as much as I understand that the problem could lie with
exchange or my line as was previously explained, I've never had the
speed that I am paying for regardless of sticking with you for so long
in the hopes that the speed would improve.

At one point you said that the exchange is congested but in a
following call (not knowing what I've been told) another
representative informed me that the exchange has a lot of capacity.
Then another guy told me that it is the attenuation that is bad on my
line.

To be fair I have tested with Telkom Guest account and MWEB trial
account and still experience low speeds on what should be 4MB line.
This has been going on for months now.

Is it just tough luck or is there something that can be done?

I also have issues with NNTP on my Business DSL 4MB Bundle. Previously
I was on 4MB Home Uncapped Bundle and got max of about 90Kbps on NNTP
downloads. In general my line never performed above 1.5Mbps. After I
switched to 4MB Business DSL for R100 more my NNTP downloads will not
even start. I do see a slight improvement in speed when doing
speedtest (2.2Mbps down) and streaming services are ok but I'm surely
not getting my money's worth. Also have other issues now like not
being able to connect to minecraft server that I used to connect to
without issues on 4MB Home Uncapped. My expectation was that all
services would be unrestricted and improved on business DSL with the
option of manually applying prioritization to P2P from the clientzone.
I see above 300ms latency to international sites when tracing routes
with local sites below 30ms as shown above. My PS3 online gaming is
also suffering now due to the the high latency on international
servers. The more I pay the less I get. Started on 1MB Bundle and have
been upgrading my account ever since in the hopes that at some point I
will just get a stable connection that performs reasonably. There is
no next step up for me from 4MB business DSL. My Exchange reports that
the max supported line speed is 4MB. If that had not been the case I'd
even consider moving up to 10MB but this frustration has to end
somewhere.
How much should I pay to get someone out to my house and my exchange
to REALLY find the the problem and resolve it. I've done "Did you
check this" dance before with Afrihost. Speed tests, line tests,
Telkom guest accounts, change cables, change router, switch everything
of for 24 hours, Try this afrihost username, try this, try that. I
think sticking with Afrihost for so long regardless of months of
frustration earns me a bit of extra effort?

And this is the repsponse:

Hi Kobus,

Thank you for your e-mail :)

Kindly note that I have done a port recreate on your DSL line and synched your line at 4Mbps, please reboot your router and advise if all is working fine.

Thanks

Pure Internet Joy!

Not sure that a lot of effort went into understanding my situation before that reply was sent. Did notice that the speed this morning reports 2.7Mbps which is silghtly better but still can't log in to any minecraft gaming servers and NNTP downloads not working at all.

With all the complaining we've been doing lately I just wanted to give credit where it is due. I upgraded my line yesterday and only then realized it's gone for a ball of *insert ugly words*. I spoke to I think the ladies name was Safe....first to drop my line speed for testing and then Ithumeleng to log with Telkom.

What an awesome experience with both of them, knowledgeable, friendly and just generally awesome. It's days like this that I remember why I stuck it out with Afrihost.

Keep up the good work guys and massive kudos to the team!

Thanks for this awesome post. I love hearing about how our service works the way it's supposed to. Sometimes it's so easy to believe that we are just the sum of the negative experiences we hear about (but I do know that there are more of those than we'd like). But it's great to be reminded that more often than not our guys get it right and deliver a great service to our clients. We're very lucky to have such a dedicated team :)

Afrihost, how do I return my faulty modem?

You'll need to log a ticket with our support team so that our router team can contact you and troubleshoot first. Only once they are satisfied that the router is faulty can we action the return / exchange.

Drop me a PM and I'll get that ball rolling.

FINALLY! Finally Type RSA is happy, finally he can stop raging. hahaha.
For the last few months it was a daily occurrence that you would be bitching, but now you are happy. :)

Don't ever mind complaints as long as we find a solution in the end :)

Yeah finally. You would have complained too if you had my experience over the last 2 months.

Afriguy might have saved the day again. :) Business optional shaping was applied to my account and according to Afriman has now been removed. Will test tonight and hopefully report good news. @Afriguy : Would that explain why I was unable to connect to gaming servers (minecraft) and NNTP was also not working? Was unable to connect to minecraft regardless of time of day. This only started happening after the switch to Business DSL

It shouldn't have stopped you from connecting to a games server, but probably did slow down NNTP.
I'm sure your tests tonight will bring good results :)

Thanks.
If not, at least I have received my OpenWeb Uncapped Gold Account details to compare with and decide on what to do next.

What is business optional shaping?

It's something new we've introduced for Business clients, available via the ClientZone :)

Would you like to activate Protocol Prioritisation?
Protocol Prioritisation will enhance your web experience by prioritising vital business traffic and ensuring that productivity is not affected by Peer‑to‑Peer traffic on your DSL line.

This will not in any way affect
real‑time services such as browsing or Youtube etc.

It's completely optional though.

That is odd. I did check the clientzone and the setting was reporting the following:

100% REALTIME
SPEED

Account Overview
Account Status: Account Active
Shaping Policy: No Shaping Applied
Protocol Prioritisation: Deactivated

Are you sure it was activated?
