Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

hey guys, i just spent the last hour reading through this thread, i'm considering getting the 2mb uncapped business account, was wondering whether what the speeds are like afterhours i'm in durban and currently conected to the NRVH exchange.
currently on telkom uncapped til 23aug, i cancelled my line with them because i kept getting kicked off internet access because telkom says my exchange is congested and users closer to the exchange get "priority" i thought that was nonsense and was hoping AH's business line with its lower contention ratio and "bandwidth priority" would result in me getting a better experience? any thoughts?
If the exchange is really congested, changing ISP won't solve your problem.
You can grab the free 1GB for life from AH and test with it. The 2Mbps Business account will give similar experiences as the free capped 1GB account. The capped account will preform better, but the 2Mbps Business account was solid for me. I don't stream though.

@AfriMan @AfriGuy @AfriGirl I recently signed up for a bundled 2Mbps package, and my line (which was previously 4Mbps) was moved over to Afrihost. I see that my router says the line is syncing at 1023kbps down, yet my Clientzone says its a 2Mbps line... What's going on here?

Two questions.

I noticed my poor ol parents business uncapped is still 1mb/s.... But their line is up to 2mb/s

Where is the upgrade ?

Then I have a uncapped account on another premises very unhappy with the performance I want to move to Capped still with afrihost dont worry, but can I do that immediately ?

The line speed is upgraded, not the bundle. 2mbps costs R100 more per month. (https://www.afrihost.com/site/product/business_adsl_bundles?src=website_nav)

Moving to capped will happen anywhere between a few minutes and the beginning of the next month (in my case moving from 10mbps uncapped to 4mbps business took about 5 minutes). Your payment will be added to, or subtracted from, your next month's invoice.
  1. Client Zone
  2. Connectivity
  3. Select your package
  4. Edit Package
  5. Select a new package (it will tell you when the package will be effective -- varies according to packages) and accept the ToS.

Its says will be effective from 1 September that sucks

But thank you for your answer.

just email them telling them that u upgraded and want it to be active now
and u will just pay the prorata :)

thats what i did going from 6-8mb

just take up 24h b4 u see the speed increase

I have had no problems with YouTube as of yet. Not a single day nor hour I couldn't stream 720p.

I only have two issues: international streaming and international ping; How can Telkom have 40ms less ping than Afrihost when Afrihost is on a fibre backbone?

It depends on who they use for their international links. I think they use SAT3, but I'm not 100% sure. Depending on who they use, where the cable terminates and who they peer with internationally makes a difference. In general my tests show that we have excellent latency and pings to the UK and US, generally comparable to our competitors or better, so we'd need to look at more specific data to see where we can improve, if possible.

Exchange congestion is independant of the ISP network. If you think of the ISP's network as the highway, congestion means someone is blocking your driveway. So it won't really matter which highway you use, until you remove the obstacle at the local exchange level, you're probably not going to experience faster speeds :(

Try out a free GB (as someone suggested) and you can see if you get a better experience.

Guys check Hulu streaming please. Currently pausing every 30 seconds. I am currently on 10Mbps Business account.
Downloads are 100% and running at full speed.

Hulu has never been awesome in my tests, though I haven't tested extensively. Will check it out as best I can though :(

Suffering horrific speeds trying to download Terra ( MMORPG client ) , coming down at 100-200kbps on a 8Mb link? Rest is fine but international seems to be taking strain.

It depends on what the load on the server is as well, and whether you are using your line capacity with any other services. I was running international downloads on a capped account this weekend at pretty much line speed so I don't think there is currently a throughput issue (from my own testing).

What the heck is going on? I can't access youtube, mybroadband.co.za, theonion.com, and a whole bunch of other sites.. Anybody else? I'm on 3g posting this...

Update: Restarted the router and all is fine again. Weird though how only certain sites died and others were ok.. :P

You might want to check if your router firmware is up to date. That's a common symptom for that :(

I couldn't say without looking further. It could be a line fault which is causing the sync to be lower than it should be.

Drop me a PM, please :(

Hey

We didn't automatically upgrade data, we only upgraded lines as Telkom upgraded them. The reason was that some clients preferred to keep the slower speed vs the higher cos of upgrading their data. We left it totally up to each individual client to decide.

Moving from Uncapped to Capped is usually effected at the end of the month, unless a pro-rata fee is paid, in which case it happens within 24 hours.
