I tested Netflix and Hulu this afternoon. And I had no buffering what so ever. Even HD video's stream perfectly. Maybe I am just lucky..... this is the first time I am using these services.

Hulu and Netflix really depend on what device you are using. It might tick the 720p or 1080p boxes in terms of resolution, but some devices demand a much higher profile of video. Hulu on a PC uses a very low bandwith codec, but on an Xbox One or FireTV it demands much higher bandwith.

@Afriman,

Just an update on my streaming issues, tonight and last night it seemed way better, got better responses on games as well. I ran some traceroutes on both the accounts(1gig free and 4mb Business) and both seemed to give about the same results. Also it seems that telkom has actioned my congestion complaints. I will keep a close eye on this and as soon as anything happens I will run some more tests and report them to you.

Hey

Please advise
This has been getting worse and worse over the last few weeks to the point where I'm at this very moment buffering a youtube video at 144p....
Started logging test results.
The internet becomes crap from between 7-8pm and then after about 10 is downright useless. Everything just constantly times out. I have to refresh a page over and over and only after a few tries does it load slowly :(

Your second hop shows quite high latency which usually points to exchange congestion. You will have to contact telkom to get it sorted.

Could you please elaborate on this? Could this possibly have affected streaming? I've moved from business uncapped so I can't check for myself.

It would have affected pretty much any services. So basically it wasn't ensuring that a business account was being treated as a business account, and this caused some unpredictable results (mostly throughput related). Once we assured that users were correctly classified, it was resolved.

This was a general incident limited to yesterday, so has no bearing on any long term issues with streaming reported here.

@Afriman,

Thanks :)

That's awesome. Traces seem pretty much perfect. I wouldn't be concerned about the timeout, that looks like a hop that blocks ICMP traffic.

This looks to me like it could be exchange congestion, from the consistent high response I see. It could also be a line fault, so I would definitely advise logging with Telkom :(

Yet Youtube vids STILL buffer in their moer in even on 480p and almost all other online video streaming sucks badly.
There IS a problem.

I was at my neighbour across the road 10 minutes ago and I checked this vid in 1080p on his 2MB Telkom line and there was hardly any buffering issues:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtwXdKkO75E

But on my 6MB line, it buffers like mad. The "Auto" setting on Youtube defaults to 480p on my line, and it goes to 720p on my neigbours line.
Just FYI, we are connected to the same exchange, so please, no BS about it being an exchange issue......

The real test would be to try your Afrihost account on his line and repeat the tests, cos we're definitely not seeing this kind of problem on YouTube at the moment. Have run tests with Capped and shaped Uncapped and YouTube is running well, even on 720p and full HD. I'm surprised to hear that full 1080p would run smoothly on 2Mbps without buffering, I generally find that you need at least 6Mbps or more for full HD streaming.

I agree with b1scu1t. 110% That is my experience also since joining Afrihost beginning of this month.

How come this seems to be the experience of so many Business users, yet it is advertised as Unshaped and everytime Afrihost keeps telling us it is unshaped etc.etc. Yet my experience and "the way i percieve it" it feels like a Shaped service.

My speed is never consistent. It goes up then drops by a few hundred kb per second and then go up again (like a rollercoaster).

It is either being shaped or someone is not telling the truth... or pure Afrihost insificient CPT capacity issues here.

We're definitely not out of capacity nor are we shaping Business accounts. We'll always investigate if there are reports of poor performance to see what the contributing factors could be, and like yesterday's issue, we're open to there being problems with policies or how an account could have been constructed. As long as we arrive at the conclusion through sound troubleshooting and eliminating other factors, we'll always pursue the issue.

I admit there is a bit of buffering on his 2MB line, but not even close to what I am getting on 6MB line.
I let the vid buffer for about a minute on his 2MB line but it is watchable from the get-go at 1080p, so to speak.

So, why is my 6MB line struggling with 720p or 1080p vids, then?
You maintain there are no issues, but there must be a balls up somewhere.

I have had no problems with YouTube as of yet. Not a single day nor hour I couldn't stream 720p.

I only have two issues: international streaming and international ping; How can Telkom have 40ms less ping than Afrihost when Afrihost is on a fibre backbone?

hey guys, i just spent the last hour reading through this thread, i'm considering getting the 2mb uncapped business account, was wondering whether what the speeds are like afterhours i'm in durban and currently conected to the NRVH exchange.
currently on telkom uncapped til 23aug, i cancelled my line with them because i kept getting kicked off internet access because telkom says my exchange is congested and users closer to the exchange get "priority" i thought that was nonsense and was hoping AH's business line with its lower contention ratio and "bandwidth priority" would result in me getting a better experience? any thoughts?

Guys check Hulu streaming please. Currently pausing every 30 seconds. I am currently on 10Mbps Business account.
Downloads are 100% and running at full speed.

Suffering horrific speeds trying to download Terra ( MMORPG client ) , coming down at 100-200kbps on a 8Mb link? Rest is fine but international seems to be taking strain.

What the heck is going on? I can't access youtube, mybroadband.co.za, theonion.com, and a whole bunch of other sites.. Anybody else? I'm on 3g posting this...

Update: Restarted the router and all is fine again. Weird though how only certain sites died and others were ok.. :P
