Hi Afriguy

My speeds sometimes go to 5.8mbit and other times it goes to roughly 2mbit. My worry is the inconsistency.

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3668162218

Not good for a Local speed test, CPT to CPT. {Because local tests should be SUPER good, if local speeds is bad. Then international will be worse}

Last night i also tried playing a few youtube video's , they struggled to stream at 480p {and i double checked that there were no downloads running that would affect it}

Seen when playing D3 getting lag issues over 1000ms.
Not for long, 1min or so. Any issues from Telkom side East-Rand.
Seen this last saturday and last night. On/Off at times.
Any international line issues?

False alarm other players also noted this.

5.8Mbps isn't bad at all, but I agree with you that you shouldn't see 2Mbps.
The latency looks very erratic on the traceroutes, and from what I can read the high latency is being introduced on our network :( Could you PM me your DSL username so I can have this checked out?

Very odd, shouldn't be any spikes in latency :(
Do you have any test results I can look at?

Biggest mistake I made, is to leave Afrihost for another ISP.. regretting it bigtime, and now I have to wait till end of september to move back

Hi,

Any idea when Twitch streaming will be fixed (if ever)?
This is currently the only issue I have with this Afrihost account.

Thnx

We're constantly testing streaming services to see where we can improve. For now we seem to get mixed reports of good service on Twitch, but we're still looking into it.

I stream 1080p Videos almost everyday and I have not had a single video buffer ever. Very strange that my accounts performance is perfect and so many people having problems.....

I am guessing you went for their home uncapped, you cannot compare home to business...

WebAfrica business has usage thresholds as well, just like their home uncapped. It's weird calling it a business account but at least they can stream rock solid all day all night.

Many clients have the same excellent experience, which is why I believe that we shouldn't jump to the conclusion that the network is broken or not working correctly. This will generally have us looking in the wrong place. I think the best way to resolve any reported issue is to troubleshoot. If we identify a problem on the network this way, it will benefit everyone that is experiencing an issue. However, if the majority of users are getting a good experience, it's very unlikely that the network is misbehaving or every user would have the same poor experience.

Many clients do not know their left from right, and for them an excellent experience is actually pretty bad unless you know any better. Again, it comes down to what device the person is using. People watching on a PC usually get away with using a bad stream, and the quality on it isn't that great.

Can you guys get an Apple TV3 and use that for your Hulu and Netflix tests?

Also many users are fine with streaming 480p , where'as some people prefer 720p and 1080p (specially for those users that have 42" or bigger screens connected to their PC or to a laptop). 480p looks horrible on a bigscreen tv or bigger display monitor.

I'm baffled why it streams fine certain times during the week days and then horrible in the evenings. (that has also been the experience for most users in CPT). Now that cannot be a co-incidence.

Afriguy i'm still awaiting feedback on my PM.

Ok, so since this morning our internet connection has been very inconsistent, so was wondering if anybody can help.

We have the 10mb ADSL uncapped business bundle and its been running like a dream all year till today, so complaints started coming in this morning. Had a look, speedest shows 4mb download speeds. Have a look on the router (Billion BiPAC 7402GX) and it shows

Connected: true
Operational Mode: G.Dmt.BisPlus
Annex Type : AnnexA
Upstream: 1019900
Downstream: 20479900
SNR Margin(Upstream): 13.0 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream): 10.25 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream): 2.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream): 12.5 dB

Contacted Afrihost and they tell me the reason our internet is unstable is because we now have a VDSL line and thats the reason its so unstable since we only have a 10mb ADSL account connected to a 20mb Telkom VDSL exchange. So i asked is it possible we can go back to a 10mb ADSL account since our real speed has halved from the avg 8 to 4, and they said no its not possible.

So what must I do? Get a VDSL modem? and till then how do I get us back to a 10mb ADSL line?
