Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Has anyone who had speed issues today seen an improvement? We are still crawling along.

We did see some latency spikes earlier this morning, however these are mostly resolved now. Other than that, no general issues at the moment.
Is everything slow or only certain protocols?

Everything. Sent you a PM.

Still hoping for more feedback. Please. We actually use this for business.

This is a no no. I can deal with the slow downloads etc etc but I need my real time services to run smoothly.

Please sort out.

If your realtime services are not great then this is not a shaping issue. In any event Business is not shaped, but real time services get highest priority on the network. Have you dropped any of our team a PM yet? If not, please do so - we'd really like to help :(

I have been in contact with AfriGuy via PM. Business Uncapped has been slow for me all day...

Not getting my usual speeds. Tried watching some Hulu earlier and it was buffering every 5 mins or so even with a relatively poor quality stream. Last night and today is the first time I've had such issues.

I'll give it until tomorrow. Know you guys have had issues today.

Also finding oddness.

Usenet is fast, 420kb/s

but Mozilla nightly udpates, 50kb/s
drivers from AMD's site, 80kb/s
FTP seems to be worse on a site I know has a fast link.

This is due to latency, Usenet (and torrents) opens many connections and therefore not that affected by latency. However the other downloads (there may be exceptions as you get applications that opens multiple connections) suffer due to using a single connection and have to wait for packet to ack'd. If you get packet loss then the results are even worse. You can read about it here: http://bradhedlund.com/2008/12/19/how-to-calculate-tcp-throughput-for-long-distance-links/

I know in all likelihood Afrihost is the best of the bunch of the choices available in South Africa (price and service) but it irritates me to no end when they go on about "no shaping" applied to Business Accounts when they know that's only one piece of the puzzle. Shaping or "protocol specific throttling" (a better term for what they do) guarantees slow speed but other factors like contention ratios and latency can have the exact same effect(sometimes even worse). I know there's an argument that latency is sometimes a symptom and the real cause is contention but because we can't measure contention (it's a secret) we can only rely on latency to figure out what is really happening. If you look at the international latency of Afrihost recently you will notice that the wool is firmly being pulled over our eyes.

Hi guys

It looks like latency spikes returned again this morning :( I'm really sorry about this, I can promise you that we're doing everything we can to identify the root cause of this issue.
Our team are already working on this and we're seeing latency return to normal - let's give our network a few more minutes to recover 100%

Thanks for the honesty, however these days you guys saying that you're doing everything you can ~ (approximately equals) to shaping the lights (more like the be-jes..) out of the traditional uncapped accounts.

Guys, again, 4Mbps, Business Uncapped. I monitor network usage. This speedtest was done with no other downloads etc on the line.

0.76 Mbps on 4Mbps is not acceptable! And I get no feedback. Tell me, please, what am I supposed to think? As I said earlier, I'm not using the Business Uncapped for torrents or usenet or whatever, it's being used in the office.

Totally totally unacceptable. Including the total lack of feedback.

I'm really sorry about this :( The latency spikes from this morning are affecting this, but we are seeing a good stabilisation.

The latency issue was a temporary glitch, we have sorted this out and seeing the network normalise.
You've been having far too many "temporary glitches" to call this a temporary glitch. Afrihost's response to a problem is: let's wait and see if it solves itself and if it does then write it off as a temporary glitch. Is there not even the remote possibility that all these complaints and "temporary glitches" are related to a deeper more serious issue on your network?

Not from what we've seen - but we're always looking. If we spot something, it'll be fixed :)

So, when should I expect to have my account operating at the correct speed? I'm still going along very slowly. And again I fear it sounds like you think it is fixed. It is not. Pings have come down. Speed is still very slow.
