Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Hi AfriMan orAFriGuy.

I am considering moving from my OpenWeb 10Mbps to your 10meg Business uncapped Platinum solution @ R997pm.
On OpenWeb my daytime speeds have been a disaster lately, and torrents after hours have also not been that great. However Gaming has been a pleasure with good latencies.

Moving to Afrihost business account will be increase my internet account by R400 a month, what I need to know, will this account work 24/ with gaming, and afterhours torrents or streaming.
I recall earlier this year uncapped home accounts were given priority after hours to business accounts.

I’m just a bit nervous to make the move and my overall experience is worse.
Also I will be paying for OpenWeb (one month’s notice) and Afrihost’s account for December totalling almost R1500 and if it’s a fail I’ve wasted a lot.

Basically I am looking for an account where I have freedom to do what I need that is based on:

Office Hours 8am – 5pm
Web Browsing
You Tube (Media) Streaming
VPN access to I.S hosted Servers and Remote Desktop
Business FTP (to I.S hosted environemnts)

After Hours:
Web Browsing
Media Streaming (You Tube, Live Leak, Vivo Etc)
VPN access to I.S hosted servers and Remote Desktop
Gaming (Steam, WoW, Origin ETC and many more)
P2P Torrents
FTP (I.S hosted Environments)
Http and HTTPS downloads

From what I have read the business uncapped has changed and most users are extremely happy
My highest usage is around 400Gig a month, I average around 150-200 Gig.
I don’t want to be shaped during office hours as per my needs above, but do want the requirements mentioned in After Hours.
Will the business uncapped Platinum suffice my needs ?

I am in Cape Town.
You may PM me if needed.

Kind Regards
Wayne.

Hey Wayne,

The business account is completely unshaped 24/7. There is no prioritization on the account.

This means that:

Web Browsing
VPN access to I.S hosted Servers and Remote Desktop
Web Browsing
Media Streaming (You Tube, Live Leak, Vivo Etc)
VPN access to I.S hosted servers and Remote Desktop
Gaming (Steam, WoW, Origin ETC and many more)
P2P Torrents
FTP (I.S hosted Environments)
Http and HTTPS downloads

runs at your full 10MBps line speed all day, not only in office hours or during the night :)

Looks like we have a problem with authentication at the moment. We're looking to find out exactly where the problem lies to get this sorted out urgently.

Please don't reboot your router until we have resolved this!

Sorry for the inconvenience - we've already got all our top people on this :(

Mine auto rebooted about 10min ago, need to upload new deployment to amazon today for weekend release, hope this is resolved sooner than later

Authentication should be back to normal again. Luckily it seems very few clients were affected.

Thanks for the patience everyone :)

Thanks so much for the feedback Zertop.
Sounds good.

Thanks AfriMan, p2p downloads are flying again. Turned out to be the priority setting being on. I reckon that should be off by default to avoid people complaining because I am quite sure I didnt turn it on.

Awesome - we're looking into that to make sure it doesn't turn on when you don't want it to. Most of the bugs should be pretty much worked out now :)

If you're keen on Business there is no shaping whatsoever - unless you opt for the Protocol Prioritisation setting which basically gives you the option to block to P2P (or shaped down to negligible) in case you have staff (or family members) destroying your local network with torrents. You can switch it back off at any time - it's pretty useful. Especially if you're a gamer and want to make sure that a sudden spike in latency due to torrents won't cause you to get bumped out of a game.

Heya guys,

Just did a test on my line out of interest and the below results were returned:

See below in bold for the stuff that is really a concern to me..

ADSL Router Results (Telkom Exchange to Your Location)
General Status
Status
Maximum Sync Rate
Maximum speed at which the DSLAM and your modem will communicate.
Current Downstream Sync
9484kbps
The current download speed established between the DSLAM and your modem.
SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)
7.0dB
Signal-to-Noise Ratio on the line. A value below 6dB can cause problems.

Attenuation
27.1dB
The amount of resistance on the line. A value below 55dB is good.

DSLAM Results (Your Location to Telkom Exchange)
General Status
Status
Maximum Sync Rate
Maximum speed at which the DSLAM and your modem will communicate.
Current Downstream Sync
1019kbps
The current download speed established between the DSLAM and your modem.
SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)
3.6dB
Signal-to-Noise Ratio on the line. A value below 6dB can cause problems.

Attenuation
50.0dB
The amount of resistance on the line. A value below 55dB is good.

Those figures are quite crappy, but my line is still performing ok. Can anything be done about this?

Thanks

Do you have your line with AH? If so, run the Stabalize Line under tweak my line in clientzone. Port reset wont help, just a stabalize.

Does sound like it. Higher speeds will drop your SNR generally at well as increate attentuation :(

Have you tried using Tweak My Line in ClientZone to set your line at the optimal sync?

Responded to your PM - the ticket is closed as soon as a consultant responds but open when you reply to the email - so the ticket is never really closed until the client stops responding :)

I have yes, but nothing changes?

Also I have still not received any reply from your support team. Which is quite pathetic I think?
