Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Hi AfriMan

Yes... this is exactly my current experience.

It used to play on medium without buffering... but since late Saturday afternoon I cannot watch a Twitch live stream on medium without it buffering on the business account. It buffers 20 to 30 seconds into the stream and then every 20s to 30s it buffers, for as long as the stream is watched, be it 5 minutes, 10 or 20 minutes... constant buffering. It happens every time I load any stream, at any time of day or night.

The free 1GB account is buffer free on medium. Here any live stream loads on medium and will stream free of buffering until the stream is finished or the browser closed.

The business account used to be just the same.
The constant buffering makes watching the stream impossible... so testing it is limited by the irritation threshold which is reached rather quickly, alas.

This appears isolated to Twitch only on the business account, everything else on it is working just fine here.

It is puzzling as to why this has happened almost overnight.

We'll need to run some tests on our side. Could you please PM me with the link to the stream you're watching and I'll check it out on a test account?

Hi AfriMan ... it is really every stream / any stream.
Just choose a stream really, it does not make a difference. It does it now on each and every stream from the get-go.

I will PM you the one that used to stream perfectly on medium, and now buffers.

You can even use my account to test if needed... i do not mind.

Thanks.

EDIT:

Oh crumbs... it has just occurred to me that my ADSL circuit used to be with Cybersmart, but as of the 1st of this month it reverted back to Telkom.
This co-incidentally is the same time this Twitch buffering issue started, on Saturday late afternoon / early evening.

I was with Cybersmart 3 and a half years ago, and was constantly told that they could not transfer the circuit back to Telkom if I cancelled the line with them and I would have to apply for a new ADSL circuit with Telkom.... but, finally, they relented and admitted that this Telkom transfer was indeed possible.

Thus, from the 1st March 2014, my ADSL circuit reverted back to Telkom.

Mayhaps a link ??

Your line management should not technically affect any technical aspects of the line. It's supposed to be a purely administrative and billing function, unless Telkom are doing things differently these days. It would be pretty scary if it were related though - but I think it would most likely be a coincidence :(

I have just tried twitch and the joindota thingy.
Tried both channels now for half an hour each not at the same time obviously. No lag or buffering, Medium setting.

4mbps line.

Edit: Scratch that, it has now started to buffer quite badly...

Well my friend on AH business gets lag here, while I play fine(I'm on IS):

Axxess Capped trial does the same thing. Seems like an MTN issue.

I'll run some tests with our guys and see if we can replicate these issues on our side with a test business account :(

Account is flying this morning 1000KB+ on a 300MB download, if it can maintain this whenever I download something, I'll be impressed, although, I'm questioning whether I'll keep the account purely based on cost, R1400 odd incl line rental for 250gb-400gb is a bit steep.

I don't mind. I luckily I do not use witch. I just wanted to see if mine did the same.
Everything else works like an absolute charm.

Maybe look at a capped bundle, but it sounds like you'll probably be in a similar region. I think for the service you're looking for, you're still getting a great deal :)

My experience is that Twitch has always been a little intermittent. You never know if the issue is you or them. Sometimes I test and it's great and it's poor for others. I had someone send me results from two different accounts where one was poor and the other was perfect. Then I realised both ran on the MTN network. So it's been boggling us for some time now :(

Aha! New version of chrome released - try the stream on Firefox - or dare I say it, IE :D

Hmmmm ... I used Firefox and Opera... I detest Chrome and, begrudgingly, will give, gulp, IE a test-run on the streams.

Do not quite see how the browser choice would influence buffering... but willing to give it a go.

EDIT:

Alas ... buffers still in IE 11 on medium.

GIAN DO SOMETHING!

Looking at the results there seems to be an issue/ congestion on the exchange :(
We aren't seeing any issues on our network this evening.

Just all of a sudden? It wasnt like this yesterday.

Can you do a port reset and all that stuff please?

Eish ... something is wonky here too.

Sloooooow all of a sudden.

Don't know what's going on but the internet is almost completely unusable. Pages take ages to load and Speedtest can't even complete a test. International downloads show as 0.09 Mbs (at least the part of the test that works).

Diablo is unplayable.

Been slow all evening for me. Local downloads are flying but anything international is extremely slow, but it seems to be happening in multiple ISP accounts(that I have tested)

It all sounds like exchange issues - however I must admit, my pings are unusually high this evening.

Edit: Nevermind, all good now.
