Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

Things seems to be getting worse slowly.
My local ping is a bit better (down from 477), but now my speeds are taking a hit (down from 6.9Mb/s).

Torrent client open:
Total download speed: 15-35KiB/s (down from the usual 600+KiB/s)
Total upload speed 0-5KiB/s :(

Speedtest.net refuses to load so i went to the mb speedtest:

Hope this may help you diagnose further. Let me know if i can do additional tests for you.

Regards

Those speeds definitely look off. Could you possible post a traceroute to Afrihost.com, it'll help a lot to see where that latency is being introduced.

now i have had it torrents and nntp stading still on 0kpbs switch over to webafrica and all is good f*** this im jumping ship cant sit and wait every night till 22:30 for downloads to start running i am on a capped account i am telling you AH is throttling the **** out of the accounts also in cape town side and i have been struggling since the start of April with the same issue before that it was fine

This is partly the reason for our network upgrades, our network management software isn't handling traffic as it should be, especially during peak times.

The site is projectmanagement.com, however you will need a login to stream anything from there.

I do not think though that it is specific to the site. I am seeing the inconsistent ping times even when I am not watching the webinars. Right now I am seeing ping times of 200ms and even a few of 360 ms on the 3rd hop.

Any movement on this? I have sent pingplotter graphs, pings, trace routes and speedtest to the helpdesk. You have logged 2 tickets with Telkom and those have been closed, with no real improvement. Its been more than a month now and we are still no closer to a solution. I am slowly starting to lose my cool on this now.

Using pingplotter I can see that the normal pingtime on the 3rd hop is around 20-25ms, which is not great, but acceptable. However, on a regular basis I see jitter of 300ms+ on that hop. On a few occassions it was more than 500ms. The ping time would go up to to 300ms+ for a few seconds and then come back to 20ms.

Normally this would not be an issue, but if you are trying to watch a video streaming, it causes the video to start buffering. If this happens every few minutes, it becomes very anoying. (And no, I cannot download the video, or tell it to buffer while I go make coffee.)

Please I need to watch the videos in order to complete a distance learning course I am doing and there is a deadline to when it must be done by. Can somebody please look at it urgently and come back to me with a solution.

The ticket is #TOP-728-52604 and the website with the videos is projectmanagement.com. Although this is not something specific to when the videos are streaming. It happens all the time, any time of the day and week. It is just that much more anoying then I am trying to stream a video.

You should most certainly have received some form of feedback on this.

I've asked our Critical Care Team to also look into this. Streaming has been okay for the most part at the moment, so there could definitely be an issue with routing in play here as well.

Definitely not! Could be that our network isn't handling the current load as well as it should. I'll check with the Team to make sure HotS traffic is properly configured.

Do you have any other games that are problematic at the moment?

I stopped playing any other game due to not wanting to get banned due to disconnects.
Pings/tracerts/skype are all perfect, just HotS isn't.

:(

Not cool, HotS should be running significantly better than that.

Hi AfriGenie. I need some clarification please - with my exchange that is congested most times during peak hours, would everything be slow?

Yes. During that peak time any type of data would be slow. You may also often get timeouts and therefore packet loss.

Ok thank you.
Reason for asking - I can't stream anything higher than 144p on YouTube, google play store updates are really slow, browsing slow, p2p almost dead, basically everything - BUT, I use an app to download videos from youtube and other sites.
I have got a video downloading right now (not from youtube) at an average of 2,8 ~ 3,1 mbps.
Try downloading from youtube and it is still dog slow - don't know why.
Now that is what is confusing me - why can I download a video from a particular site at a decent speed (on 4 mbps line) but everything else is dog slow?

Maybe someone else is downloading the same video in your neighborhood?

Ok cool. Trying another video - obscure crap that not many people will be interested in - and it is also running at a semi decent speed (2,9 mbps).

Look, I don't doubt that there is congestion at my exchange. I am just trying to understand how some things download at a nice-ish speed and other stuff is dead.

Pretty much... You may see some better performance on local services as the latency won't be as noticeable.

Are you seeing a disparity?

Ok thank you.

Latency plays a significantly more important part in streaming than in downloads. The latency will mean that your videos take a lot longer to buffer, but downloads aren't really concerned with that latency as long as the files aren't corrupted.

I get you. Thanks.
But quite literally - this is the only download that is going at a decent speed - everything else is slow (p2p, http, google play store downloads, ps4 update, even browsing 9gag and downloading pics/gifs from the Android app is dog slow).
