Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Same network but we'll need to see what the issue could be. Did you manage to run any tests?

It seems your uncapped network is very congested and as such P2P is pretty much non-existent! What annoys me is that it took numerous back and forth emails to get to that conclusion. I am disappointed that I am paying an extra amount since upgrading to 2Mbps for less effectively! I can understand the need for less P2P priority and shaping etc, but have virtually no P2P is just not acceptable to me!

This is the capped thread though. If you are used capped you shouldn't be seeing any shaping at all :erm:

Update to my issue yesterday:

I called Telkom to do a port resync yesterday morning, when I got home everything was working as it should be.
No idea what the issue was or why a port reset would fix it but it is now working.
Unotelly, Hulu, router authentification, etc. all working.

Afriman - can you please advise on ticket [#YGL-739-93214] Slow 10meg speeds in PE during the day.

I proved yesterday afternoon by buying a Axxess 3GB capped account that something is not 100% on Afrihost.

Provided speedtest screenshots (as requested) of 8am and 4:30pm speedtests to MTN Cape Town.

In the morning everything was 100% linespeed on both, in the afternoon Axxess was 8.7Mbps (100%) and Afrihost had dropped to 5.6Mbps.

I believe this has been escalated to your Dev team.

That shouldn't be happening.

Been like this for over a week !

Thanks - would like to know why and how this will be resolved.

There is definitely something strange going on with Capped in PE. Browsing, latency etc is fine and in general the service is great. But the moment I do any international updates (EVE and Elder Scrolls Online for example) the updates come down at a snails pace, whereas before they would fly down.

So I used to get 1m/s+ when doing these updates, I now get 40k/s if I am lucky. It seems to speed up after 12 as leaving the update on overnight it is complete when I get up but was crawling along at 12pm with no chance of finishing within 6 hours at current pace.

so the bottom line here is that Cape Town and PE are screwed, for now?

Yes.

Axxess actually put up a notice. No idea why Afrihost pretends there's no issue.

We are experiencing high network demand in the South and East (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban), resulting in real time services being affected on Uncapped accounts. This infrastructure is expected to be upgraded within 3 weeks, which will resolve the congestion. We appreciate your understanding whilst we await completion of the upgrade.

I dont think its limited to the uncapped offerings in my honest opinion. their capped UNshaped products are failing right now.

is there no way we can get more details on exactly WHY its only Cape Town and PE? I assume PE traffic goes through Cape Town or what?

Seems they have 2 POPs(Points of presence) now. Each have their own IPC. One in JHB and one in CPT. I think they are working on getting a DBN POP as well.

Then I think its safe to assume they dont have enough capacity on their Cape Town IPC??

Would explain why up north things are not so bad?

Exactly the same for me.

Hulu, netflix, NNTP, updates all crawl during the day, although pings and latency is excellent.

After 12 until 8:30am it's back to normal then degrades during the day.

Something is up.

And I'm more than willing to support the Afrihost brand. I like what they have offered to the market and up until recently things were fine.

Just some decent technical feedback, like the Axxess network notice and then some, would be appreciated.

Yes. As explained in the network status I posted. :)

@afriman,@afriguy,@afriwhoever

Please can someone look into my ticket. #CMV-212-13780
I am not getting any replies from you guys. My capped account is performing like a donkey, yet my IS is running like a race horse...

Hi @afriwhoever here.

Our team looks to have replied to your ticket. Unfortunately, there is higher contention in the South at the moment which could be affecting you speeds. Your line is syncing at 8030 kbps. Not sure if that is the ideal speed.
We are planning on adding capacity in the coming weeks. I know it is rather frustrating at the moment and I am so sorry but we hope to make the addition soon.

Why haven't you followed your sister company Axxess's example and at least posting it in the network status?

Because they don't want possible new clients seeing that and being scared off?

I was so close to switching to Afrihost. Glad I stayed, and upgraded, with mweb. Yes, I have a soft cap but at least until I reach that I have no worries.

We're following this up with our team now.
While Axxess does use the same network there are some key difference in how things are run and managed.

And another thing, how can Axxess give a clear ETA in their network notice as to how long to wait but you can't provide any actual ETA and can only say "soon"?
