I posted a bad speedtest and then realised my router was configured with an account from another isp.![]()
Afriman, I'd like to know why I have Afrihost connectivity issues when connecting to Netflix? I can browse the website, but when I click ANYTHING it just gives me a red cirlce that goes around and around... You talking to an "old hand" at Netflix, been using it for years.
Change to an IS based capped account, and the problem goes away.
Change back to my AH capped account, problem returns
Change again to IS based capped account, and the problem goes away again...
Change back to my AH account and the problem remains.
????
That's definitely a weird one, I can't really comment on first hand experience around Netflix as I don't use it
Looks like AfriGenie is running through some options in another thread though. Is the streaming poor regardless of the platform you're watching Netflix on?
Poor? It's non-existent when I have my AH ISP active in my router. Yes, I saw that thread and I commented there as well. Not to duplicate, but I think its something worth talking about considering more and more people use Netflix these days, and the amount of time that I have wasted on trying to solve it.
The thread I linked seems to centre around Netflix issues on Chrome, what platforms have you tested on?
Is something up with Afrihost? Been getting horrid speeds all afternoon. Have tried rebooting the router etc, no change.
When I switch to another ISP it's full steam ahead.

If it is a "Netflix issues on Chrome" why does it go away if a none MTN carrier is used?
I have also been getting streaming issues with AH lately and find that a shaped Telkom account actually out performs AH unshaped from 7PM to 11PM.
Trying to communicate with the people using the afrihost ticket system, and its a tedious process. So I'm now here to see if anyone can help me. I have a 2Mb capped ADSL account using a 4-port Planet Router. I live in Glen Marais JHB.
Last night (19th) at around 9:30PM, I had a disconnect, line went dead for about 5 mins and came on. Afterwards, my latency has been unstable, and downloads are up and down. I play MMO's on a European server and my latency quickly climbed past 5000ms up until i got disconnected. Contacted Afrihost using their ticket system and they requested some tracert results. The results to europe are mostly around 220ms which is normal.
Speedtest results are interesting though:
2/20/2015 8:41 PM GMT 105.210.47.106 0.66 Mb/s 0.37 Mb/s 34 ms Johannesburg < 50 mi
2/20/2015 8:44 PM GMT 105.210.47.106 0.18 Mb/s 0.40 Mb/s 244 ms London ~ 5650 mi
Youtube streaming at 480 doesn't work well at all with lots of buffering going on. Funny enough, I get my full 200kb/s when trying to download a 200mb display driver from AMD's website. But as it is, gaming/youtube is currently a no-no.
Just received an email from Babini.N - gave me an account to test, so I'll give that a try. Will report back on what happens.
I'm wondering if they are indeed doing some kind of live http streaming prioritization, certainly in Cape Town, for You Tube, NetFlix, Offside Streams which all seem to work well for me - and stuff live http streaming from anywhere else!
Just for the sake of interest I decided to retry the same file, same server, but with a Telkom Shaped account:

Telkom Shaped beats Afrihost Unshaped hands down at that speed.
By an order of magnitude in fact (AH 39.2 Telkom 395.0)
It even beats WA by 25% and is peaking at 5.43Mb/s throughput as I type.
I think it is time to reevaluate my ISP use if AH / MTN is not able to handle streaming and I am already paying for the Telkom Account and I don't need all the fluff that PLUS+ adds, I just want Streaming to work.
EDIT:
After watching the Movie I switched to a Live TV Feed of SKY Sport F1 and am getting a better picture than I ever had on AH, I think we are starting to see a role reversal here.
I blame MTN for the degradation, not AfriHost, but Afrihost have to take the blame for switching over and selling out the client base.
