Afrihost capped ADSL problems

Well I am sad to find this thread. Applied for the 75gig Capped bundle a few days ago, now I am reading that they are throttled. Is this true? Are Afrihost throttling there 'unshaped' bundles?

We don't throttle or shape capped accounts -EVER!! Not sure where you read or heard that - it's totally FALSE :(

Easy now AfriMan, it was a justified question.

Take a look at the other posts in this thread and you'll see why questions like @sydCPT's are coming up. If our speeds were good we wouldn't be considering these kinds of things, right?

But Youtube vids buffer and since about 3pm today, 720p vids do not even load and 480p buffers like crazy before playing.

Something is FUBAR and this is not what I am paying 1K a month for......

My Torrent speeds at the moment. Yes torrents coming down at a mighty 3.1 KB/s and peaking at an impressive 25KB/s as of yesterday.

It would actually be funny if it wasnt so incredibly sad!

Unshaped, yes, contention ratio prob through the roof.

You get what you pay for I guess!

+1.. i have a capped 10GB account which i use as backup and most months i hardly even use it. today i decided to download some stuff before month end, and its so bad that i'm rather back on my el-cheapo uncapped account. id assumed that capped accounts would have better performance seeing that one is paying for a certain amount of data.

We specifically manage the network to ensure that contention is at an acceptable level to get the best capped performance and unshaped experience.

Please drop me a PM, so we can check what could have gone wrong here :(

Afriman, why are my torrents only coming down at 3 - 12 KB/S at the moment? Am I the only one experiencing slow download speeds on Capped at the moment?

Is anyone using Afrihost's capped product on a 20mb or 40mb VDSL line?

I'm thinking of giving 40mb a spin, and am keen to hear some feedback :)

Thanks

Well, the 10MB product is barely useable so yeah, try this first before spending an arm and a leg on a product which will ultimately frustrate you for 3 weeks of the month. Read this thread from the beginning for more horror stories.

Sorry about this :(
Can you please drop me a PM with your account details so I can have a look at this for you?

I have provided you with this info on several occasions Afriman to no avail. You have my account details and ADSL circuit number. Please do something with this info now! You keep apologizing but do nothing to address the myriad of previous complaints!

Well I'm kinda hoping for different feedback from the 20mb or 40mb line owners

I do have your details and we'll get someone to give you a buzz and look into this. I'm not sure about the myriad of complaints though, we're generally getting very positive feedback on the network performance.

I've said this a few times, indexing your speeds based on torrents is not a realistic indicator. Torrents are affected by a range of external factors, many of which you can not really get answers to. Does the seeder have the complete file? Is his upload throttled or at what speed has he limited his uploads? The number of seeders is not a real indication of speeds your will receive :(

I was under the impression Uncapped clients with Afrihost is "throttled"?

We absolutely never throttle any DSL products. Only "Home" Uncapped users may experience shaping from time to time based on the network capacity vs demand. We do everything possible to shape the least amount of clients (and to the least extent) and we unshape all traffic for as long as we possible can.

When shaping is applied, it only affects non-real time services (downloads and P2P) and real time services like browsing, streaming, gaming, etc are not affected - unlike throttling which limits you total throughput (regardless of protocol) for a period of time.
