Afrihost capped ADSL problems

Thank you Afriman. I think nearly two months is fair to have waiting, by the end of this month. Lets hope.

An update, i opened a trial 4mb Uncapped service with Mweb, and experienced no problems at all, Afrihost said they are still looking into it with telkom. It seems it must be linked to the route Afrihost take with its Mweb backbone. If it was a line/exchange problem i would have then have same issues on Mweb.

Ok so, good news, well not really, but i think i have found the problem, i have been testing different ISP's, had no problem except for Axxess. On Axxess i had the same problem as Afrihost, and guess what, they both use the same backbone of MTN! So that must be where the problem is. Glory, finally it is narrowed down.

:) yeah they do both use mtn business.
Would suggest that your Line Attenuation indicates an underlying problem ... mine is 6db down.
How far are you from the exchange? Is there a closer exchange? If there is have them move your adsl line there.
Also appears to be a prob with your SNR. Down should not be lower than up. The higher the value the better. Get this looked at. Having said that my 4mbps line is happy with 16db... which is lower than my typical of 25db... which went all bloody wonky since the Telkom metro ethernet and msan upgrades in Milnerton.

It's important to remember that a dB is not an absolute value. It's a ration between two values. It represents, in the case of SNR, the ration between signal strength and noise floor. So it's very difficult to say 6dB is better than 5dB. It all really depends on what the ratio values are.

Agree. They should not be conaidered absolutes. They are however useful as an indicator... especially if their values deviate from expected norms. In the case of the values posted.... they aren't looking like the typical and certainly worth a look at. Obvious concern would be that downstream indicators are weaker than the upstream.
Anyway my 2c worth... for why the problem might not be the Afrihost network :erm: ?!??

@Leepage... Crackle on your telephone line would support a line problem... but if you're getting good consistent performance on MWeb... that might be your best solution. The line stats are awfully odd tho.

Geez... that's not cool at all :(
Have a suggestion in trying to get to the root cause of your issue. PM Ranger. He's the unofficial Telkom presence on myBB. Ask whether he thinks your line stats suggest a physical line problem.

Not cool, sorry about this :(
Drop me a PM with your account details and any reference numbers you have on hand and I'll get this checked out for you.

Okay, so my feedback on the 10MB 100GB product is that it is a massive waste of time since I never really got close to 8MB syncs, stuck on 3.34MB download speeds. Several routers keep losing connectivity (authentication) to my ADSL account every 3 hours. Telkom Pretoria and technicians have been monitoring the line and came out and could not find any faults on the exchange or my line and said the problem lies with the ISP. Torrents are throttled on a supposedly "unthrottled" account. In short, the last two months have been an absolute frustration and the product is simply not worth what you are paying for! Why pay this for a 100 GB cap when you are being throttled and never seeing the 10MB speeds as advertised even though your exchange is capable of this. I would rather go with 4MB uncapped but I shudder to think what kind of shaping and throttling is happening here in light of me OBSERVING WITH MY OWN TECHNICAL EYES how torrents are being throttled (currently downloading at 20KBPS as opposed to the usual 400KPBS across several torrents, not just one and across multiple computer systems in my home). This is what frustrates me with Afrihost staff! They insist that no shaping is happening on the bundled accounts yet the facts show an entirely different story.

Don't bother wasting your time with this product, it is simply not worth it!

I'm really sorry you feel this way about our product :(
All of our Capped accounts are indeed unshaped so you shouldn't be seeing such slow speeds on anything, your internet experience should be great.

Please can you drop me a PM with your details and I'll get our team to take a look at things for you.

Telkom dudes have been in the area yeasterday and today and had serious hassles with staying connected today and now the line speed is half of what it was.....

ADSL Firmware Version A2pD035d.d23e
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 3123 Kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 603 Kbps

And on that note, Youtube and any other streaming video takes yonks to buffer and is hardly watchable at 480p due to buffering, never mind 720. It's the only way I can get to see MotoGP, WSBK, etc as I refuse to pay Multi"choice" almost a grand a month just to be able to watch 3 or 4 channels.

In the beginning of this year when we first got the Afrihost 10Mb capped package, all was 100% with 10Mb/s speeds, no Youtube or streaming issues, etc. Now to sit with this speed and these problems makes me rethink the whole deal. Sorry guys, I know you are doing your best, but can you please light fires under the Telkom techs or give them PK's or something? Before one of us does it.

Edited to add:
DownStream Connection Speed 2755 Kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 579 Kbps

Done via the router admin panel.

Getting worse by the minute.

Well I am sad to find this thread. Applied for the 75gig Capped bundle a few days ago, now I am reading that they are throttled. Is this true? Are Afrihost throttling there 'unshaped' bundles?

10mb 100GB update. Line is only downloading at 2mb now. How I have willingly paid close to 900 rand a month for such an unusable service is beyond me. Other ISP accounts don't have this issue! Time to move ISP I'm afraid!
