Afrihost is terrible!

As its my first calendar month with ADSL, I decided to give Afrihost a try after a superb week in August with them (for R1).

Anyhow, honeymoon is over...

I've done 3gb since the beginning of the month on my 1mbit uncapped acc.... Speedtest says I'm getting ~130kbit... I can't believe I'm being throttled like this. (Btw, tested telkom adsl - get ~880kbit)

Cancelling my account now, will give my money to Openweb from now on.
 
15gb is not much mickey, this is not really afrihosts fault. Those IS accounts suck

If you do choose openweb you best choose gold and not IS because the IS accounts openweb sell and afrihost sell are the same thing.
 
Capped and uncapped are two different animals. You cannot judge uncapped on the performance of capped.

I have excellent speed from axxess which unless I'm mistaken is also IS.

Edit, Definitly IS.

Edit again. I suppose we're talking the cheap accounts, but theyre not really comparable price wise to Openweb Gold tho.

I can attest to that, the cheap Afrihost I had dropped markedly when they moved to the IS setup, used to be much better before that. As mentioned on another thread using MWEB and very happy with them as I can VPN to my heart's content without issues. Haven't used Openweb, but quite a lot of people seem to be quite fond of them.

Hi Killa, I know... was posting to illustrate to OP that I don't think he has an AH problem. Issue might be with line or his DLs (seeds, etc). As I said, I'm don't DL much, so I'm happy right now!

Mickey, as stated, speedtest with other acc is fine... can't be line. And I've tested various forms of downloads - P2P, http with and without SSL, FTP and SFTP... all in all i'm pretty confident its not my line or downloads...
 
Are you saying 880kbps is the expected dl speed for 1mbit line??
Theory says max rate for 1mbit line is 110kbps or so.
Am I missing something?

Noted... if you want to DL (plenty!) then head over to OpenWeb. If my DL pattern changes that's where I'll be going.

Is it one of the 'cheap' uncapped accounts?
I was throttled just as badly on my Mweb 4mbit account.

kbit vs kbyte. I get 920KB/s on my 10mg line. Thats very different from 920kb/s.

So the reason I haven't been doing much on the line is that I'm still on Screamer Wimax uncapped... Gotta say, I've been impressed with their network, my d/ls are stable and at the speed it should be. Only reason I swapped was for a better latency... hope it wasn't a mistake!
 
Yikes! I just saw that the 10mg gold account costs R2.6k! I'll stick with my R899 axxess account thanks.

No but bare in mind i don't mean IS sucks, IS is awesome just their cheapie uncapped accounts get chopped down to quickly. If you are a mild user then yea they will be great but if you are expecting to do 5gb a day those cheapie accounts ain't for you on a 1 meg account. If you want full speed 24/7 on everything for a reasonable price openweb gold is where you want to be or those unshaped 2k accounts although unshaped is not reasonable in terms of pricing :D. IS and mweb are not very keen on 24/7 downloaders.
