Decided to stop reading all and any fiber MyBB articles and threds, it's just depressing.

It can be very depressing. The suburb right next to me was one of the first to get fibre. Sadly, doesn't seem like there are any plans to upgrade us, even though I am less than 100m from the point where all the fibre terminates.

Same here, everyone all around me getting fiber, but we are not even on the Telkom map yet.

Anything else?

Looks like your exchange is responding to ping (in reference to your later posts) so it's not one of the newer upgraded exchanges. The latency does seem internal but at the moment I have no reports of latency, especially in the North. We'll need to do some troubleshooting here and see if we can pick up any patterns that make sense :(

Also experiencing lag spikes on HotS and LoL. Averaging about 240ms to HotS.
Tracerts and pings seem fine though.

This is pretty weird - from the other tests you've submitted looked like the latency is probably at your exchange and timing out. Your TTL doesn't seem low cos you go a result over 3000ms - I'm guessing this is severe congestion or an exchange fault :(

So, update ... the Telkom guy came out. Turns out there was a fault on a line which he replaced while we chatted with him.

SNR is back to 11.5.

The line is syncing at 4megs, despite the disputed distance from the exchange - aaaaand the worlds a happy place.

Live and learn.

Thanks

Good to hear that things got sorted :)

Gauteng East. Tired of this crap.

Yup. Dealing with this for 6 months now. But been asked to post tracerts every time so not sure how posting horrible tracerts sorts out my issues. But anyhoo....

The traceroutes definitely tell us a lot - though sometimes it only what it not the issue, and we have to keep looking for more indicators where the issue is :(

My internet was perfect. 21:30, all hell down the tubes.

And so, I would like to ask. Is it possible for the the exchange to be perfect most of the time, and then shot to hell the rest of the time. The exchange node is about 30 meters from the house.

It's very possible, depends on how the utilisation works with the other people in the area and the capacity of the exchange and backhaul infrastructure :(

my line speed is going down to 1024k, but sometime that will go up to 1750k. original speed should be 2M, so what is the problem?

It could be a sync fluctuation on the exchange, but it depends if those are your actual sync values or the speeds you're getting. How are you measuring those speeds?

Are you routing via a local internet exchange? 2nd hop looks like a local network router, so 3rd hop would be the exchange/BRAS here.

AfriMan,

Any idea if Afrihost plans to introduce Static IP's on Capped accounts?

I don't need much data, so Uncapped with a Static IP does not work for me.

Are you saying you get 1Gbps? Are you testing with a fibre line, or how are you measuring these speeds?
