Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

@Afriguy - I'm aware that this 'free data' is a trial run up to the end of November, and it'll only be determined around that time if it's to be extended from midnight to 6pm. on a more permanent basis, after that date. However, can you confirm now, that at the very least, things would return to 'normal', whereby Afrihost would revert back to the free data from 11h30pm to 7h30am ?

Have in the last 1/2 hour, increased from the 10GB to 20GB package, in anticipation that I can make Afrihost my sole / main ISP, assuming things hold up well with your network, both towards the end of Nov., and afterwards .. look forward to your comments.

Heya :)

I'm honestly not sure what we'll do. And that's the honest truth, not trying to be super salesman here, we really aren't sure how we'll proceed. For now, in terms of network performance, we're good. But we need more data on usage patterns etc to make a final decision on both the Double Data promo and Free-Time.

So AfriGuy, can you explain what happened here? All my other ISPs worked fine, just not AfriHost. Why did AfriHost go down for me completely at 8PM last night? And this after several nights of excessively poor streaming.

I just signed up for a CW trial so I'd like to know before I make the switch, can you deliver on your product or can't you?

Definitely weren't any general problems from our end, the only trend I picked up last night was a spate of KZN issues which related to Telkom faults in the area.
Could have been that your line needed a port reset, and changing to another ISP may have done that. If there was a network-wide issue there would be pages on pages of queries :)

I assume your line was offline? Or were you just seeing a poor performance using our DSL?

Thanks - appreciate the quick response, anyway.

Some personal feedback - I use the progress bar in YouTube vids to determine if things working well, and so far, it moves along nicely enough on Afrihost (just once during the night did one clip stutter, but that could also be a YouTube 'thing' ? - after refreshing the clip, it worked well) ; general web-use is also more-than-good-enough to this point.

better not dare remove Double Data or midnight to 6pm Buffet lol :D Its working well, and its great. Send Gian my regards ;)

Was definitely an issue last night, as I had massive lag spikes in WoW, and my son's Twitch streaming was constantly buffering. I'm not 100% sure of the time, but it was intermittently between 19:30 and 22:30. I'm in JHB Edenvale area, so should have been unaffected by KZN issues.

If you do see videos that buffer, but seem OK when you refresh it could be that the content isn't on our cache yet. We'll need to check why though, so if you see that happen again, mind dropping the video URL and resolution you're watching at?

Yeah. Please don't remove the double data and free time. They make a world of difference of not worrying of data usage at all atm. Great value.

Sure can do - one 'funny' thing I've noticed, is that on my (relatively) slow Telkom-run 2.5Mbps landline, YouTube vids on Afrihost are starting off at 360p, and so I need to manually switch to 480p. 720p seems to be a bit of a problem so far, as the progress bar doesn't tend to move much. I've had similar problems on Vox, so that's why I thought it might be YouTube themselves - have seen forum comments whereby those with much faster lines, at times struggle to even do HD.

As it is, I'm quite happy viewing clips at 480p, as it's only on a laptop :)

I tend to watch quite a few of these, so you might want to chk. if this content is in your cache, in the meantime : https://www.youtube.com/user/twit/videos .. but these are only clips, not the full episodes ; I'd need to post a lot of individual links, to show you all their shows full episodes !

Could be that YouTube's recommending a certain resolution based on your previous/ average throughput too.

I think speeding up the vids to 1.5x - 2.0x also has an effect (on the res. dropping), but I tend to pause them first for about 30secs to 1min. to let the vids catch up re the buffering, before re-starting to watch, in those cases. Not serious, in any event.

Managed to grab one that doesn't seem to be on our cache, although I'm still seeing really good throughput to the video.
I'll see what our Network team can find with these :)

Thank you - when I have more time, I'll post the full episode links to their YouTube vids. (they have about 20 shows a week!)

One more thing, if the home uncapped was introduced last year.... perhaps it's time to remove the "new" label from it to avoid further confusion?

It's still a relatively new product when compared to Premium and Business Uncapped :)
