Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

P2P should definitely not be shaped. We saw a little bit of latency being reported from some users, so we'll need to look into what may have happened. Which region are you connecting from? :(

Definitely deprioritised/contended

The R1 accounts, like mystery data, etc, have not significantly impacted the amount of data clients are using at a single point in time. Our team are monitoring the network closely and (as mentioned by Gian in his email) we will stop signups if we believe that the network is being directly impacted.

It's truly best if you do continue to post your results and findings so we can pass onto the network team to investigate. That is the surest route to improving performance. Assuming we will do nothing about it and not posting info is kind of self-fulfilling :(

So, slow p2p/nntp doesn't classify as directly impacting the network, so only when streaming is affected then you'll stop signups?

I'm not going to bother posting any-more screenshots of slow torrents showing an impacted network during peak, because it goes nowhere, not even an acknowledgement of the fact, just a thank you, have a great day.

It feels shaped sir.... I'm connecting from PMB side. How can you assist?

For me too, but just stopped posting coz nothing is going to change or happen as they don't even acknowledge it as a problem going with the green status light.

Clearly there is not enough bandwidth for everything in the evenings and p2p/nntp gets a lower priority (aka shaping).

I gotta ask though, why you downloading during peak, and not making use of free uncapped off peak? I'm sure they introduced this 18 hours uncapped to help take demand away from netflix time, although I'm sure introducing 4TB R1 accounts at the same time isn't helping.

That R1 thing is like the guy at the buffet, where he's really hungry and loads his plate up but then can't finish it (eyes are bigger than your stomach).

I do download offpeak and use a lot of the free data we get but it's still super slow.

I still feel the network is still congested and there are to many users and not enough bandwidth :(

I'm at home now, not feeling well, I'll run one more ubuntu torrent test to see if there's shaping, but normally it's only in the evening, but mornings it was better, although it was the weekend...

We need to determine if that is the case, which I am told is not. It could be that we're not managing the network as efficiently as we could. There are also a few projects going on at the moment to improve the overall experience, and it's possible there is an unexpected residual effect on other services. We need to investigate further.

In terms of capacity, my understanding is that we're not in danger of congestion at the present moment.

Let's try to recreate the issue you're seeing. If you're willing, drop me a PM and we'll have our guys test with you and see if we can get the same issues on our side or monitor your traffic to see the effects.

That would be the case for Uncapped products where shaping is in effect. Unshaped means that we don't apply those classes to prioritise traffic types.

This is a capped account, p2p deprioritised during netflix time, doesn't "behave" like unshaped, but like shaped, where is starts very slow, slowly climbs, then lots of peaks and valleys as opposed to the off peak where it starts quick, climbs quick, and has a table mountain look.

Just saying.

For sure. Like I said, we need to investigate as the policies are not setup to behave that way :(

So it's been a week now. Can anyone tell me what's happening with the shaping profile for Armored Warfare?

Last night streaming was super slow. ping to bras.afrihost.com was 17ms.

Was getting speeds below 3Mbps and streaming was loading at 500kbps. (I have a network monitor app on the iPad).

Please pass this on to the network team to monitor after 12am if there's any streaming issues. Will monitor today and post if there's further issues.
