Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Definitely weren't any general problems from our end, the only trend I picked up last night was a spate of KZN issues which related to Telkom faults in the area.
Could have been that your line needed a port reset, and changing to another ISP may have done that. If there was a network-wide issue there would be pages on pages of queries :)

I assume your line was offline? Or were you just seeing a poor performance using our DSL?

It just seems odd to me then that when I tried to switch back to AfriHost later the evening it still didn't work, so I doubt needing a port reset was the issue. I'm not in KZN either, I'm in CPT.

But it does at least answer my question. I'll see how AfriHost goes tonight but I already suspect I'll be moving to CW soon. Combined with the constant inability to stream properly, I don't think AH is what I'm after at this point. The network seems a bit too finicky for my tastes.

Chiming in, getting horrible latency on YT and other streaming services.

Second time this week too. :(

Youtube can't load anything at all. I'm ready to throw my PC out the window.

YouTube streaming is TERRIBLE. Buffers a lot atm. Switched to Web Africa, PERFECT!

its a wide spread issue

Yep I'm on capped

On a Windows 10 device, launch task manager, on the performance tab select your active network interface. Kick off the update process, wait for the downloads phase. Back to task manager, your network receive performance counter and graph should be close to your ADSL link speed. You can also do something similar on a MAC.
Just ensure that no other devices are connected to your router when you do this test because if other devices are busy downloading stuff, your test results will not be accurate. There is also a way to test the connection speed on IOS devices. Let me know if you want to do this and I'll send you the details.

Switching to another like for like ISP account is one of the best ways to validate whether you have ISP issues. If the test ISP account resolves your problem, you have an issue with the ISP you've been using.

Also try this to troubleshoot the YouTube issue while on Afrihost. . . Do a minimum of 3 speed tests from speedtest.net. The average result of the three tests should match your expected line latency and your ADSL line download speed. If it doesn't, it is pointless to continue with the rest of this test because then you have another issue.
Configure Google's primary DNS IP (8.8.8.8) on your router. Restart your router, check that it is now set to 8.8.8.8. Restart your test device. This is to clear the name resolution cache on the device. Test Youtube again.
My experience with Afrihost's DNS servers were and still is not good as I have explained in my earlier posts. The biggest issue is stale name records. If for example Google makes a change to the YouTube server environment and Afrihost DNS server cached host name records still point to the old YouTube hosts, your computers will still use the old YouTube hosts if you use Afrihost DNS.
I changed my DNS earlier this week to Afrihost DNS servers and yesterday I had to change back to 8.8.8.8. Skype for Business stopped working for my users. As a test I took one user's Windows computer, changed the primary DNS on the computer's active network interface to 8.8.8.8. I did an ipconfig /flushdns on the computer and Skype for Business started working almost immediately. When I changed the router's config to 8.8.8.8, all other users' Skype also started working. Google's DNS is more reliable than Afrihost's. There is no question about this.

Test with another ISP.

More than likely a Telkom problem.

Something not right this morning. Daughter watching Netflix and resolution refuses to climb above 240. This on my 20mb ADSL.

Maybe an Eastern Region issue seeing as PE is also slow?

Test with webafrica is fine
I say this every time the problem is with afrihost in Cape Town

I couldn't get any streams to start this morning so did some comparative ISP Testing.

If Afrihost still can't handle the Western Cape on Evenings and weekends all the free data in the world is useless.
I guess I won't be moving back after all.
