Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 3

I know you're not AfriGenie, but I guess he will see this as well. Was playing Diablo 3 and my latency went up to 3k latency so I quit (again).

I pinged bras and then google (see below the first 2 pings).

I then swapped to another ISP account and it was fine (see 3rd quote).

I then swapped back to my AH account and it was fine (see 4th quote) but while typing this post it went belly up again (5th quote).

Swapped back to other ISP account again and it was fine and it is staying fine even after 10mins.
Edit: took 15mins to screw up. If it is indeed exchange congestion, what can be done about it? Or am I screwed and at the mercy of Telkom?

AfriGenie, it seems you resetting my line yesterday did not help.

Definitely sounds like the issue is at the exchange. This is why we encourage testing with another ISP for at least an hour, as results generally look good when you first connect and then the congestion settles.

Unfortunately Telkom is directly responsible for resolving demand issues on the exchange, we only manage the individual line. We do our best to collect the complaints for each exchange we come across and petition Telkom on behalf of our affected clients :(

I'm having the same issue with support they didn't reply after 24 hours and even after AfriFella stepped in they still haven’t replied.

I've noticed and logged packet loss and increased latency on a few AH links. For example 2 months ago to this day and time checking a PoE server I was getting 158ms as of right now it is 215ms with a few extra hops in the trace.

I think we need to just get hold of the right people at AH so that they can look into these latency issues and the pack loss on the London side. But trying to do that is a whole other mission.

This is definitely a good channel to do so, we pass this info directly onto our engineers and they generally test immediately, or monitor traffic the same day.

If you have specific results we can test or recreate, please post in this forum :(

Getting <2 Mbps to Google Play Store on 20 Mbps line. "Unshaped" capped account... Please explain?

That is odd. We definitely don't shape Capped, and even on shaped products, OS updates are given more priority for a better overall experience.

If you are still experiencing this, drop me a PM so we can check with our engineers :(

Instagram/twitter is slow. Sites take long to load. Weird.

Twitter was running pretty well for me over the weekend, and it's a service that we definitely prioritise as a browsing, real-time service on Uncapped and Shaped Capped.

Did you run a traceroute?

With regards to my query to AH Client Zone, it seems that there is some confusion within AH (Ticket Ref# TZD-395-65370).

The Shaped/Unshaped mail was finally shared with me and the following statement is noticeable:

"PLEASE NOTE: If you do not select any of the options above, your DSL Package
will automatically be doubled-up on the 1st of January 2017. "

As noted clearly on my all my correspondence to AH on this subject - My data is SHAPED and I did not receive the double data. This implies that AH is providing me with the worst of both options!

From a legal perspective, I deem this to be a breach of contract on Afrihost's part as my original agreement we entered into clearly stipulates that capped data will not be shaped. In addition, the changes to this original agreement allows one the flexibility to choose either shaped data without the double data or unshaped data with double data.

We're still looking into what happened here, but I think there's no question that Afrihost will honour it's agreement to you. Technical glitches aren't really a representation of the company's intention. We stated that Capped data was not shaped, and it wasn't, and now we've introduced a new product which is, and given you the option to stay with what you had (prior to the Double Data promotion) or go onto the new product. We will definitely honour that, we just need to time to figure out what happened in this specific case, while thousands of other clients have seamlessly moved to Shaped Capped without issues :(

Just my little 2c... Weekend was pretty bad on the Afrihost network... I resorted to using my MTN Lte for everything....

I asked support if they were shaping and they also said that they will shape as a last resort.

So i started playing around and noticed that if i disconnect the account and re connect then my speeds go to FULL speeds on torrents for a few minutes and then slow down to about 50KBps bear in mind this is a 20meg line...

But this is the first time ive had an issue with Afrihost... Lets see how this plays out...

I don't think a quick reconnection would bypass the shaping controls, once the shaping is in place, it would be set on the system.

We definitely need to keep an eye on that, it's weird :(

A few months ago I tested the Afrihost network and I noticed that a lot of my international traffic was being routed via Australia. I asked a few questions and it was said to be resolved but still didn't show any improvement. Fast forward a few months and I've got a 300GB Capped account from the beginning of the year but I can't continue with the up and down nature of the speeds.

I've checked again and I believe that the issues myself (and other posters in the last two pages) are seeing is that when there's congestion or something up, it's more evident because of that long route to get to the destination. When the network is quiet, it's less evident and going the long way around doesn't cause as much of a fuss.

Having said that, here's two tests (one with Afrihost and the other with WebAfrica). I tried to make both tests as fair as possible (blocked all other clients on my network, cleared DNS and traceroute'd against the same host. At this point in time there was no packet loss on either network but the route on Afrihost's network was definitely longer and I have previously noted this to be very susceptible to packet loss.

I'm not raging or looking for a quick fix, just wanting to be open about my reason to jump back to WebAfrica's capped account. I love Afrihost's social media presence, network updates and iOS app which is what I want to stay around for but obviously the connection is what counts the most.

Hopefully it'll improve in the long run and I'll be able to jump back on board ; )

Nothing should be routing via Australia unless it's in Australia. Can I please test the IP you are trying to reach?

This was exactly my experience

I'm doing an mtr test for reddit.com using google DNS servers (8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4). I've tested with the auto set DNS as well just to be sure but had the same result.

I'm also in CPT and tracing to Reddit.com also goes via Australia

I'm not sure about shaping, but I have to reset once a day or every second day to get back to line speed on AH.

Can confirm this on my side as well.

Seems like my trace is doing the same. I'll check with our admins what could be happening :(

Any other examples showing the same?

That sounds like it's more of a line sync issue. Restarting your line is not going to do much for something on the network side :(

Doesn't seem like it's that as attenuation and noise stay the same as does sync speed. All I know is that it works.

By the way how much time is to be expected when waiting for support to reply to a ticket?

Those stats won't alway change, but we find that sync gets iffy on some lines that are connected for a certain length of time.

It really depends, but we usually aim for 24 hours max wherever we can.

How long have you been waiting?
