Adsl side of things working normally again. Voice dead. Do you still need a traceroute for that?

Hehe, I won't see if your voice line is faulty from a traceroute - but it'll show any latency spikes that aren't supposed to be there.

My line adsl has just dropped again. Dammit.

EDIT: And now it is back again. Latency fine. Speeds fine. Voice dead. Going to see if they are fiddling at the exchange....

EDIT 2: Technicians working at the exchange. Makes me a little nervous.....let's hope they are fixing things instead of making it worse.

It's a good thing if they're working on it already :)

I'm in Cape Town and connected to the Swartklip exchange
Me too! Few months back had the same issue...logged Telkom fault online...teccie came same day said "I'll move your line over to another bank"... And that's all she wrote! Been flawless ever since.

Must of all the Telkom calls i logged that Telkom responds very swiftly in M/Plain!

Interesting that. Will see if I can get something sorted with a call. Did they remotely move you, or did the technitian physically have to move you?

Physically... He said he'll have to go to the exchange...came about 35mins later to check and see, did a modem reset and voila! He declined the Bells tho...

I know ASSIA annoys literally EVERYONE, but as far as I read, the only benefit FastPath offers is a better ping on the first network hop.

ASSIA, which sets your Path Mode to Interleaved, makes your first hop's ping higher, but stabilizes the line and prevents packet loss.

Yesterday Telkom changed my path mode from Interleaved to FastPath, but I'm only able to download at 14000kbps (1.4mbps) on my 20-meg line, and my packet-loss (downstream CRC) is significantly higher than when my path mode is on interleaved.

On Interleaved, I get between 1.6mbps - 1.8mbps. This doesn't make much sense. I would have expected this to work the other way around.

Can someone more network-savvy clarify this?

Switching over to interleaved will up the sync profile sometimes, but it won't always translate to higher throughput values.
What's your sync changed to?

Sorry to cut in here, but would interleaved be better for streaming? Trying to figure out things during the evenings with regards to streaming issues

No as the latency would be increased. Streaming is also affected by latency.

Either mode works for streaming, the latency differences really are nominal.

My modem allows me to customize my line stats. I can't remember what it's called and I can't check now because I'm not home.

It basically lets me configure my line if I see my SNR is too low. I can adjust this between -10 and 10; -10 being the max stability, but sacrifice the line's speed, 10 being best performance.

So, if I disable this option entirely, my line syncs at 20-megs. This setting is current set to -2, which bumps my SNR to around 8 db as opposed to between 5 - 6 db. So my line is syncing, if memory serves, at 1.8mbps ATM, but I'm only getting 1.4mbps out of it :(
