Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

Speeds are shocking tonight, cant even stream 360p youtube on a 20mbps line.

YouTube was OK for me in the afternoon. Was this only poor in the evening? Could have been some tests running on the network in the evening, I'll have to confirm with the team :(

Besides torrents which are a miss and go depending on time of night, the only streaming sites I use is YouTube which is also a hit and miss but has gotten much better with the tweaks done in the last 2 weeks. I always try use the highest bitrate 1080p or 720p, 1080p seems to have the most problems.

This site in particular has mixed content, most is 720p and a few new movies in 1080p.
the problem is it seems capped at 300kbs on afrigreen, where on other providers its not.
maybe their streaming content is using another transport layer similar to file sharing hence the capped speed being "managed"

at the end of the day, Once you understand navigating the site and avoiding its blatant add tactics etc, it has great content.
I just would love to start a movie, and watch it without having to pause it for 10 minutes to buffer enough content to watch further.
I don't have this issue on other providers.

Funny thing is, if I use IDM (Download manager) that uses segmented downloading, I can download the video at full speed.
but streaming sucks.

Torrents have been really tops for me. Yesterday I was pushing about 1.7MBps on my line, which is the fastest it ever goes. I did a torrent at about 5pm and got speeds around 1MB on a single file which is pretty good.

Something may have changed later. Do you only experience that it's hit and miss in the evevings or in the day as well?

Why is it I'm not having as much problems as I'm seeing here, everything I've tried so far apart from the BBC streaming has been working better than my regular account, with the odd exception which I would expect from a POC network, and even then the issues rarely last more than 2 minutes at a time.

AfriMan, how does a home uncapped account differ to a business account on this POC, I'd assume it would be following the same rules as the regular accounts?

The business rules are the same as the normal network, but becuase we're using a different network kit and software, we've had to adapt some of the rules to the new system and that may be where some of the kinks are in terms of different experiences. We're actively looking for these to squash them :(

Had an issue with my international connectivity suddenly dropping about 3 times last night around 9-10ish

Teamspeak and World of Warcraft disconnected instantly

Switched to my backup IS account and it worked fine

Did this come back to normal or do you still see it? How did you determine it was an international only issue (so we can try to replicate those steps)?

I run constant pings to 8.8.8.8 iol.co.za and a few others to monitor my latencies to each. My router also does a disconnect/reconnect after failing to ping its keepalive IP repeatedly

Well I switched back to Afrigreen after midnight with no issues to report

OK cool. Can you please let me know if this happens again, so we can also test and see what happens :(

Late evening, i changed over to Telkom so not sure what time it came right. Could have lasted anywhere between 20.30 and 23.30.

This seems to be a consistent issue, especially around 20:30 - 12:00am...

This is the problem test get not happen when Users having Problems weekend and evenings

I'm not sure what you're saying here :(

What I meant is that I don't think we'll be doing any testing that might affect your experience. If we do, we'll definitely post a heads up here if possible.

I think what he is referring too is that last weekend it died on Friday evening and was unusable, Sat, Sun and Monday, only coming back to life on Tuesday when you guys returned from the long weekend.

I put a ticket in on Saturday and i only get reply Tuesday evening witch means no support over the weekend and public holidays as normal

Looks like the team are aware of the issues raised from last night and this morning.

They guys have made some changes. Can you guys please test now and give us new feedback on the services you were having problems with?

Really appreciate it, thanks so much to everyone testing for us :)

The network team worked through the weekend, and it was only the reps that weren't available in that time. The guys regularly go through this thread for any indication of problems so that would have picked up any reports in the thread.

Do you mean a PM or a support ticket?

There was definitely regular support throughput, including the public holiday :(

You’re not alone with a smooth POC experience. You have to bear in mind that we’re more likely to complain than compliment. ;)

All the feedback we get is really useful. It's also helpful to know what is working well and doesn't need to be tweaked :)

Appreciate it :)
