In most cases Openserve does have backup batteries.

You can try to power the ONT and router with a battery to see if they work. Most ONTs and routers are 12v input so you can double check the power requirements and power them on during the next loadshedding slot to see if it works.
I'm on OS. Gizzu powers ONT and 2 routers. Not had any down time during loadshedding.

@AfriNatic so we should start using VPN...

Morning,

This is an interesting article.

Currently we get a ton of abuse@ emails from robots monitoring torrent swarms. These emails are sent by these robots and include IPs gathered in these swarms. These emails are usually from jurisdictions not in SA and sometimes not in even in English.

As an ISP we won't know if a crime has been been committed or if the source of that email is even legitimate. We therefore can not act on those emails.

As an ISP in South Africa we only act when

1. Requested by SAPS.
2. Compelled by a court order
3. Take down notices from ISPA and ICASA

We have been complying with these requests since inception.

Well what time did you pay? What bank did you pay from?
I wouldn't have asked if I paid from a bank other than Standard Bank (which they bank with). And I paid around 14:00. The payment should have reflected immediately on their side, especially given that it's not the first time I'm doing it this way. Even in ClientZone it also states my account is in arrears

@AfriNatic

I paid via EFT yesterday, but I'm still getting SMS's that payment is due and my account is in arrears. What gives?

You used the correct reference?

Might be a delay with the payment allocation.

Can you mail accounts@afrihost.com with the proof of payment and your Afrihost account number for them to locate the payment and allocate it manually.

Yes, I used the correct reference. I verified it on the POP.

After doing as you suggested, I got the following response.

At this time, we are unable to handle manual payments via EFT, Bank Deposits, ATM deposits, Cash Payments or Cryptocurrencies.

...which I find strange because I've been paying with the exact same method for months.

Unfortunately accounts is doing away with EFT payments due to the work load relating to tracing payments.

Can you send me the ticket ID so I can have a look.

I screwed up. I used the incorrect bank. Hopefully Bidvest returns the funds.

I redid it now and verified the details were correct. I'll send you the reference.

edit: just checked and it now shows "Account is in Order"

Thanks for the top notch response times and apologies for me getting egg on my face :p

No problem.

Sorry about that but it would be a good thing just to get in touch with your bank to see if they can assist getting the previous EFT back. It would likely return if there is no bank account number matching at Bidvest.

My experience... and perhaps others?

Initially when I joined AH on MFN (May 2020), I experienced a significant amount of packet loss that interrupted live calls (Teams, Webex and Zoom). After about three months (Many tickets and analysis with AH and MFN) the issues were resolved.

Subsequently, (Aug 2020 to April 2021) I used the 25MB and 50MB pure Fibre on MFN. During this period, I experienced virtually no packet loss and interruption in live calls (Teams, Webex and Zoom). barring larger known outages...

After the announcement that AH is going to automatically upgrade clients from 01 June 2021, I experienced a number of instances leading up to and beyond the upgrade (Packet loss, interruption in live calls Teams, Webex and Zoom).

It appears that recent configuration changes have impacted or negated changes done between May and July 2020.

@cavedog I'm using the WS5200 and after setting DNS to my locally hosted sinkhole the sinkhole is picking up the DNS requests as coming from my external IP. Any idea why this would be?

I'm on Frogfoot and while things have mostly returned to normal for me one thing which hasn't is Afrihost VoIP. I noticed today that the quality is seriously degraded; voice cuts off to the point where it sounds garbled making the service practically unusable.

Seems like this weekend is going to be another bad one using my fibre with MFN.
Timeouts happening every second again, P2P and VOIP is impossible. Was doing ok yesterday but now the network is just tanking again. I'm at the point where going back to DSL seems like a better option compared to this unusable fibre.

The problems with the timeouts on MFN is not limited specific users, it's a network wide problem as I can observe on downdetector and from colleagues and friends on the same network. Once I detect issues everyone else starts reporting problems as well. I feel like this problem with MFN isn't being seen as a network wide issue and not being investigated as such.
