Afrihost - Pure Fibre Feedback Thread

200Mb line with OpenServe + Afrihost, been getting steadily worse over the last couple of months with anything streaming (YouTube, Netflix, FB etc.) and often pages just time out as well. To the point where it is now happening a lot. A refresh seems to fix it (most of the times) and pings to the normal places all appear fine. Can't seem to find a pattern...
YouTube seems to be the worst affected.

If you let me know what to monitor I can try add info so we can get it sorted.

Last night I was having packet loss issues with Apex Legends again (Belgium and Singapore servers) and all streaming/video services were slow.

There is definitely something going on with international connectivity.

Anyone having issues with Samsung smart TV’s not connecting to the internet

Only this device reports no internet connectivity

Getting fibre activation page only on TV though

Fixed : asked to activate via login.afrihost.com very weird

Also getting intermittent YouTube issues. Netflix will run fine but YouTube will go from 4k or 1080p60 down to 144p. Seems to depend on the video, so probably something to do with CDNs.

Yeah, I just got the same on my desktop. Been out since 6.30pm and only noticed activation request now. I'd logged on remotely though at around 8pm and there was throughput...

For anyone in the same boat as me with Afrihost + Octotel...
Afrihost blames Octotel, Octotel has done tests with me showing that the connection/line between my ONT and them is perfect... in almost a year of fighting it turns out Afrihost has only ever logged two tickets with them...
And now that the two are figuring things out things have gotten even worse. Constant disconnects and time outs.

Come to think of it, I had issues with Afrihost/Octotel in town, especially in the evenings. Same issues as you, high packet loss, jitter and unusable 'streaming' in the evenings, specifically to EU servers and CDNs.

I thought nothing of it as I was moving out but now that you mention it, it was bad on the 50Mbps from the last week of January until even this week (as reported by flatmate who stayed on and took ownership of the line now).

My current issues have been on my girlfriend's network which I have moved into, from the same time period and ongoing. Upgraded to 100Mbps to remedy it but no dice. (Afrihost/Frogfoot)

The mornings are a bit more stable, generally before 9AM but 12PM-12AM is really frustrating.

Anyone find Github (specifically) slow the past week or so?

Yes, GH was unusable for me on Friday. CircleCI too.

Google Meets had occasional spikes to 1500ms - 2500ms this week which was also really problematic.

We currently have an ongoing escalation with Google Noc on the issue with regards to youtube. It seems that it's only youtube affected as google drive, DNS and other services like gmail and API is not affected by this issue. Once I have any feedback I will revert back.

Hi all, I need some it nerds that know how to work a network sniffer to assist with proving the afrihost/vumatel DDOS issues. I've been playing nice now for 2 months trying to get there engineers to believe me, but now need more amo to get this problem resolved.
thanks in advance
L:

See the DDOS vulnerability is stil there , even after working around the clock now for a week to resolve it

Random Question regarding Openserve Aerial Fibre.

So we need to get a giant tree cut off at home in the coming weeks.

The tree-feller who came to give us a quote said it's almost guaranteed that the fibre cable will break as it's running underneath the tree.

What's the best way to deal with it and minimise potential downtime?

So this just happened.

@AfriNatic I want to downgrade my line, to 30Up 3Down, is there any hidden costs that I should know about beforehand?
