Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I cannot see PM resolving anything either, my query about an afrihost account unable to even reach 4MbI git the whole overheads story, yet i eliminated this by eliminating the line as a possibility, I was told that it has never been seen that a afrihost 4mb account has reached 4mbps. that doesnt sound like a 4mb account to me.

A call to the masses, on a 4mb account, please stabalise your line to 5 or 6mb, do a speedtest and post your result. I hope to atleast find one account that is capable of bursting beyond 3.6

I honestly feel that taking this offline and chatting to the right people about this will have better answers than posting on a public forum. Just my 2c :)

Well, then maybe you should send me a reply rather than insisting that your marketing material is true? :) The issue here is completely independent from how my personal account is (or isn't) performing. What you're doing is throttling, even if you claim it is shaping. Shaping has a quite clear definition, and you're not meeting it by any stretch of imagination.

As I said, if we aren't meeting this I need to have a thorough, isolated look at what's happening here. Please give me a chance to run through your PM, account and account history so I can give you an answer.

So OS X Mavericks, almost 20 hours of continuous 'downloading' and I've got a total of 1.8 gigs. Somewhat underwhelming.

Can someone upload it Facebook or Youtube or some other important service that isn't shaped as badly? ;)

Lets test it, i do not want it to end up that I didn't give you the opportunity to resolve my query

I am getting to much criss-cross facts and it worries me, someone earlier mention you have a standard non disclosure in your signature which is accepted when the mail is opened, the same way using your account is an automatic agreement to the latest AUP and Ts and Cs

Meaning you can't question our AUP or legal documentation? Doesn't make much sense to me here. Again, we want to give our clients the best experiences possible - not shape them into the ground all the time and keep them quiet. Far from it.

As I said, you clearly have some serious concerns that need to be taken further than posting on a public forum.

Cool, I look forward to your PM so I can put you in contact with the right people to discuss this further.

As I said, this is completely separate from how my account is or isn't performing. Yes, my account is performing like ****, but even if it was performing like the best Afrihost account ever, you would still be throttling. Just to make it clear, I completely understand the economical realities of providing ADSL internet connectivity in South Africa, so I completely understand why you need to throttle, but please, stop claiming that you don't throttle. Being open and honest about it would make you a much better ISP than you are now.

Dude, we've been open, honest and transparent about shaping vs throttling. It's been brought up so many times, debates many times on how and why we shape as opposed to throttling - so I'm a little confused as to why it's being brought up in such a serious manner now?

To be frank, since starting with Afrihost it's always been "never BS the client" and that's how I follow it. Honestly, I couldn't post here saying that we shape if I knew I was lying. That goes against my personal morals and ethics.

I mentioned to sparke, you're more than welcome to PM me and I'll either personally call you or put you in contact with the right people to discuss this further.

when you attach a non disclosure to your communication it is legally binding and i am in trouble if i mention the communication, this is my worry

This doesn't mean you can't say anything though.
Where do we display this?

An agreement of non-disclosure is only legally binding on some kind of agreement between the parties. You can't unilaterally bind one party to non-disclosure.

OK, let's make it real clear here. Throttling is limiting the speed of an internet connection compared to its maximum throughput. You're saying that you're not throttling. Your argument for why you're not throttling is that you're only limiting the speed of data packets that are not going to Nepal, so hence it's not throttling. The amount of mental gymnastics required to get to such a conclusion is staggering, and I pity you for having to make such a claim in public.

For Pete sake... Throttling is resorting to a fixed speed once you have consumed a certain amount of bandwidth. This is only lifted once you fall into the safe category again.

Shaping, on the other hand, happens dynamically and is lifted or some relief is forthcoming once there is enough capacity available to enable such an action.

You're the one resorting to all kinds of mental gymnastics as throttling and shaping are fundamentally different for the above reasons regardless of which protocols are affected.

It may seem like throttling to you because you're shaped 24/7 to a certain percentage of line speed but it doesn't make it throttling by virtue of definition.

But dude, every time you claim you're not throttling, you're lying. That's not very open, honest nor transparent. As to why it's being brought up, it's being brought up because some poor individual a couple of pages ago bought into your marketing stunt so hard that he was swearing at and insulting other people for pointing out the truth. When your marketing goes so far that it gets people to do that, and you even thank them for swearing at and insulting people who have done nothing to say the truth, don't you think that goes a bit too far?

To be frank, since starting with Afrihost it's always been "never BS the client" and that's how I follow it. Honestly, I couldn't post here saying that we shape if I knew I was lying. That goes against my personal morals and ethics.

Look, I'm not saying that you personally are intentionally lying, and I've been quite clear in blaming your marketing department for this cluster****. However, even if you're not intentionally lying, what you're saying is still not true.

I mentioned to sparke, you're more than welcome to PM me and I'll either personally call you or put you in contact with the right people to discuss this further.

And as I mentioned to you, I already have and I'm waiting for a reply - but you would rather spend your time defending an indefensible claim in public.

Cool, so you're claiming that throttling isn't throttling because it at some times isn't applied, while Afriguy claims that throttling isn't throttling because they have a whitelist of sites in Nepal they don't throttle. Good luck with the mental gymnastics of reconciling those two claims!

the advice is to do a bit of homework, make sure YOU know the difference so you can question your superiors as you wont trust them as you know they use the word shape when they define a throttle

I think you guys are going to scare them off the forum....then it's back to lengthy phone calls and email tickets.

But dude, every time you claim you're not throttling, you're lying. That's not very open, honest nor transparent.

Sorry, I'm not lying. You aren't bringing any facts to the table that prove that - with the exception of your unsubstantiated opinion on the matter.
Please PM me so I can put you in contact with our team to discuss this further. Clearly there are some serious concerns from your end that need to be brought to a proper environment.

sorry hush, we have agreed before, but the definition of a throttle is not based on usage, it is defined speed limit, protocol specific or not, refer to my wikipedia post. if you slow any service to any specific limit that is throttle, the same way the account is throttled to 4mb and is unable to exceed it. it is termed throttled

I'm not going to admit that I'm an expert on running an IPC network, I don't any of us are involved in this conversation to be entirely honest.
Let's rather bring the debate to the table of the appropriate people (that I've requested via our PM) instead of going around in circles here.
