Im always shaped for some odd reason, I even checked 1am this morning, was about the same as now. BUT, my realtime services are ALWAYS fast and I manage somehow to get my "Ubuntu" downloads done during the course of the day/night. Not sure about the others, but the shaping policy, iv'e gotten so used to it that it doesnt really bother me as much as it did in the past, Afrihost the lion tamer an me the lion I suppose. :P :D

Thanks for posting this. While we'd like to shape as little as possible, we believe that we're delivering the best experience possible. Had we implemented throttling or the like, we believe our clients would have a very poor overall experience that would be hard to justify.

Glad it's working the way it should, though you should really be experience lighter shaping in the wee hours (unless you're a leaderboard candidate) :(

We're being overly cautious these days to prevent massive latencies on the network, so we try to pre-emptively shape before what our trends show us as time when usage peaks (say 8am in the morning or 6pm in the evening). However the shaper will autmatically relax shaping if it sees that the spike is not as severe as expected.

Data Used: 176.81 GB
Average Daily Usage: 9.31 GB
Projected Monthly Usage: 288.48 GB

Afriman not sure if that's a lot, but I can promise you about 80% of it is Netflix hehe.
 
Not to start a war here, but I remember a while back when Cale Town was being shaped like JHB is being currently. I also remember those select few that thought that we should get over our issues and just deal with shaping.

Depends on which package you're on as well, but it looks like you should get some relief overnight at least, depending on the demand. Drop me your username on a PM and let me take a look at this :(

I have one question.

I have a 2Mbps line.

How come do your leader boards for 1Mbps have waaay more than me? 283.47 GB to be precise? Exactly how is this possible with only 6.5% capacity and throttling on all downloads possible including streaming even?

There shouldn't be any shaping on real-time protocols, which is why those figures are possible.
When I was on the home uncapped, even during 6.5% shaping, I would get full speed on my Youtube, etc.

I'm getting to the point that a lot of people have reached before. This is starting to feel like the norm, rather than some anomalous event.

Yes, but could streaming really take that much data? I stream very often, in HD sometimes as well and don't go up that high. These guys must be forwarding to different ports to download.

VPN bypassing the shaping

I haven't had a 1Mb line in a while so I was slightly off with the calculation.
You're right. Assuming 104KB/s for 31 days, you'd hit 272000MB = 265GB. Add 15% upload overhead (usually 10, but I've seen up to 15), and you get 305GB. Now add the fact that you could have a 2Mb line, and you'd see it maxing "1Mbps" and then you've got 338GB a month. But yes, it's highly improbably that one would reach that with 24/7 streaming, as you'd spend the better part of the month buffering.

My realtime is horrendous right now. Been near unusable for the last hour or so. And for the last 2 days tweak my line has been borked "Please try again. If you still have problems, please contact us."

Current Sync Rate: 832kbps Edit: Sync is now down to 576. Yay

I've reported it on the open support request. Hopefully someone can fix it.

Sounds like the sync is degrading which is very worrying. It may be happening to varying degrees. This is usually a physical line fault, not an exchange issue, unless it's a problem on the port card at the exchange.

Let me know if Telkom come back to you on this :(

Depends on what you're streaming, though it is very unlikely. I've seen some very bandwidth hungry services, usually they just spike at high levels, but some consistently eat bandwidth. Nothing saturates your line like torrents though, so my guess would be that :(

It's all over the place right now. It's been down to 408 but seems to be sticking at 608 right now.
I spoke to someone there and they've escalated it. How long it might take is anyone's guess.
Whatever they've been doing has now wiped out calls on the line too. But yea, definitely something funky on Telkom side.

Check phone line filters... try unplugging all phones and see if it helps
