Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

What are you streaming Netflix through, and have you watched more than 30 seconds of anything? Netflix adjusts video quality dynamically, and it always starts out looking crap.

Streaming through my Xbox360. Watched a whole episode of Burn Notice just now and it remained at terrible quality throughout the entire show. Occasionally, it would improve a little bit, only to go back to an ugly, blurry picture. :/

UK or US?

That's odd. We haven't watched anything tonight (yet), but I've got video quality set to the middle option on netflix.com & it usually settles on better-than-DSTv-SD quality within 40 seconds or so through our WDTV Live media player. I don't feel the need to watch American Dad in HD. :p

Xbox is set to UK. I did stream Arrested Development just now with SD quality, and then at around 15 minutes in, it actually made the switch to HD. Could it be that some shows just stream slower than others?

Yeah, not just you tonight. Netflix is up to ****, and hulu won't play without buffering on 1mb/s streams... on a 10mb line. Something ain't right...

I'm new to this topic but I'm taking it's for giving feedback on whatever Afrihost service you are running.

I'm running a 2mb/s Uncapped Afrihost line and here are some results:

So i signed up with afrihost with an existing telkom 2mbps line and it was soooo good. (netflix and youtube streaming on multiple devices at the same time with an awesome picture and no buffering)

i was so impressed that i decided to transfer my line to afrihost and upgrade it to a 4mbps line and data bundle.... and this is where it seems to have gone pear shaped... The afrihost 4mbps line is craaaaaap, it syncs at about 3.3Mbps, i get about 1.9Mbps on speedtest (about the same i got on my 2Mbps line) youtube buffers all the time and netflix plays on the lowest quality and still buffers.

Afrihost say they are working on it but im staring to get the feeling that they are out of ides....
Update on this: Word from afrihost is that a technician was assigned to this but if anything its getting worse. now my line is syncing even slower at 2Mbps, to add insult to injury, im being shaped to 50% so i get to use less than a quarter of the line and data im paying for. Im really starting to regret my move to afrihost....

At least that's a little comforting. Couldn't even use it at all just now with the constant buffering. YouTube is also abysmal.

Everything seems great. Speeds and pings are very good this morning.

My ping and packet loss went haywire (400-1000 on local and international servers regardless, up to 20% loss on the MWEB Teamspeak server (!!!)) from Monday evening and gaming was impossible last night, but things seem to be back to normal this morning. I'm going to monitor it periodically today (Stellenbosch, 1meg line uncapped).

After a fair bit of research, I finally got my NetFlix up and running using UnoTelly. Awesome little service btw!

All this aside, @Afriman - The video quality on Netflix is pretty appalling on my 4Mb Uncapped currently. Any idea why this might be? Youtube, etc all stream without issue.

If other video services are streaming well, it's difficult to say without investigating fully. I've chatted to a few guys around the office, there did seem to be a few hiccups over the weekend. But as far as I know international service should be pretty normal, aside from the EASSy story.
