Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Netflix adjusts the streaming quality based on its assessment of your line quality. I have experienced similar problems on Netflix via Afrihost (while it streams fine on Openweb). The Afrihost team was very helpful in troubleshooting this but we ended up deciding to wait for the EASSy issues to be resolved as the higher latency could be contributing to the problem.

So I suppose it is because I am the only one who is bitching about the very slow news service that I don't get a reply? Obviously, why are we being shaped to oblivion at 22:30 is the question, I don't mind during the day Mon-Fri but I do object to after hours. It would only be fair to also shape streaming movies (Utube, Netflix, etc)

Define slow news. I don't think I've ever received much more than 150KB/s with Afrihost's free service, and I'm unshaped.

Screw that, I rarely download these days and love my netflix. Would rather say shape the pirates instead of us getting our content legally.

4meg service is maxed here on a private usenet server,no problem

I would not define Netflix as obtaining entertainment legally, rather obtaining it ethically.

Video over IP is going to be the Next Big Thing (because it's cheaper and on-demand).

DSTv et al is gonna get knackered due to their high prices.

My ping and packet loss went haywire (400-1000 on local and international servers regardless, up to 20% loss on the MWEB Teamspeak server (!!!)) from Monday evening and gaming was impossible last night, but things seem to be back to normal this morning. I'm going to monitor it periodically today (Stellenbosch, 1meg line uncapped).

Test conducted on 4/17/2013 8:42:15 AM (LOCAL)

Download Speed: 1001 kbps (125.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 427 kbps (53.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 65 ms

So I tested again and things have gotten bad since this morning:

Test conducted on 4/17/2013 2:12:06 PM (LOCAL)

Download Speed: 712 kbps (89 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 338 kbps (42.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 371 ms

Anything happening with other Western Cape/Stellenbosch users? almost 400ms (600 on another test a few minutes later) to local servers is not really usable for gaming when I get a chance tonight...

A normal speed is 203 KB/s with news.afrihost.co.za and news.astraweb.com on a capped 2Mb/s line and account account. I saw the same speed when Afrihost lifted shaping on the un-capped accounts. I have been throttled down to 50 (quarter speed) but 5%? I think that is a bit much for after 18:00. Why must I wait till after midnight to get descent speeds.

I wouldn't know. Get a business account - the prices are excellent. I got 450-550KB/s with Newsdemon, but I cancelled that account. Tired of usenet, and torrents fly on business.

Why? I normally stay off nntp and p2p during the day so that business can have their time, then at night .......... I had a look at client zone and see no shaping decide to goto nntp and Astraweb running flat out at 204 KB/s ............

I bit of time back I said we have a spy here.............. Then why after I mentioned nntp is running flat out I get chopped by 50%?
Too much of a coincidence.

Now nntp is down to 25% I have a look and CZ says downloads 50% p2p 25% so ........... nntp is classed as p2p when it should be downloads............50 KiB/s of 2 Mb/s according to PAN. Oh and why after 4pm? Does not bode well for the evening.........

Test conducted on 4/17/2013 5:09:37 PM (LOCAL)

Download Speed: 289 kbps (36.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 139 kbps (17.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 1133 ms

Um... Help. Any reports of a congested exchange in Stellenbosch? Anything?

Speeds stabilizing now :D
