The speed of my 4mbps account took a huge hit over the weekend. I've been busy and haven't had time to really keep up after the initial uncapped tsunami of news so I hadn't even heard about these throttling limits. I signed up late March and I'm pretty sure their conditions had no mention of it at the time. If I remember there was a vague "if you do hundreds of gigs then we'll have to do something" mention.

I've already gone into the clientzone to cancel the account at the end of the month and will be going to MWEB (but can't afford to do so now). But, is there anything I can do to cancel it now and get some kind of refund? I'm sure the answer lies in this thread but I just don't have the time at the moment to go searching.

Many thanks.

PS - REALLY disappointed in Afrihost. Heroes to villains in the blink of an eye.

Cancel the account in the clientzone with immediate effect. Then contact their billing department and request a refund due to them not delivering what you signed up for.

It's so sad that things have come to this.

I think it boils down where they say you will never be capped, which is BS - you should be uncapped on the width you signed up for e.g. 1024, 512 or whatever - bringing down your bandwidth e.g. to lower one means they are not delivering what you ordered anymore I signed up for 1024 uncapped not 384 uncapped. All the ADSL ISP are the same over promise, hide little catches in the AUP (or change the AUP to suit them) and then under deliver.

They are going to turn this on us and say "ja, look at all that greedy little users - want to pay almost nothing and want the sky" after they started the whole thing rolling - what did they expect? we all going to sign up for uncapped and not use it?

Has anyone who signed up this month for the 384k accounts had any success with getting a refund or a pro-rata refund? I would at least expect a pro-rata refund.

Right now the FAQ on the Afrihost site still does not have any clarification as to what excessive usage on 384k is. We had no idea what we were in for just like the march users were before they changed the terms. Yet I see 384k users that are being refused refunds and now it seems that they are even pointing out their "one months notice" cancellation policy.

In my mind it comes down to this...

Been cut to less than 3k! after 15.8 gigs. Can't access my router the speed is so low :) I'm going to cancel too. Was a huge supporter and advert for AH, but this isn't cool. Even if i pay the 30 day cancellation, then so be it. Can't handle being throttled.

This whole scenario defies logic though.
Afrihost Uncapped should come with a warning:
To get good speed. Please DO NOT use you uncapped account!

Analogy could be the same as to tell someone buying a Porsche to please not drive faster than 60 else the engine will fall out.

You can tell all your friends you have uncapped. Just please don't use it or it will disappear.

I switched to MWB last week as I could not handle the lies I was told by AH staff. I can report back that during the day MWB throttle RS almost into non-existence but in the evenings my RS account flies. No complaints here cos I know what I am getting compared to AH who just throttle you completely.

This was the first weekend I used the acc and it was ok, throttled, but ok.
Downloads would fall in at about 150/300k during the day then bump up to 450k at night.

What are MWEB's daytime HTTP general surfing and Youtube like, downloads from Ubuntu servers or MS Updates etc; like? Since I have a need for daytime surfing and general use too.

Today I hit the 30gig milestone and my internet speed has plummeted to near non existance. The girlfriend was crying uncontrolably that her farmville took forever to do something. That does it for me. I was under the impression that at 30 gig some stuff would be shaped with more vigor (torrents), but now it would seem your whole connection is throttled (no shaping). Goodbye Afrihost.

Wait, you mean this throttling prevents people from using all those stupid BookFace apps? People, we have found the silver lining!

Has anybody sent them an e-mail, asking about their T&C's for 384/512 users? And to just remind them, it's not on their stupid website!

Update:

Don't worry, just cancelled. And to think i stuck up for them during the first uprising and tirade. (tail between my legs). Sucks man, to be ripped and lose my pride. Bunch of Knob jockeys AH!

Okay, okay, so Goodbye to Afrihost, Goodbye to Gian, Hello other ISPs.

Does anyone know if Mweb does the same thing to 384/512 users, most people on the forum are on 4mb, I am not there yet!

It's not just 384k users. I'm on a 512k uncapped account and just hit 15GB, was then throttled to 128k on all protocols.

I'm canceling today as well, would have stayed on if the threshold was at 100GB. 15GB is far too low and unreasonable. Their silence on the issue isn't helping their cause either.

Could someone maybe start a refund thread please? Because I think it is only fair to get a pro-rata refund with these CAPPED "Uncapped" packages!
I'm still fighting for a refund, but maybe if we all get together in one thread, and demand a refund it would help?
What do you guys think?

Hi

Well i logged a complaint to ASA and copied afrihost. Lets see what comes of it:

------------------------------------------------------------------
Good day Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa

I would like to lodge a complaint against the ISP known as Afrihost.

Last month they were advertising and selling a product on their website which was a 384 uncapped data account. Nowhere in the terms and conditions did they make mention of any restrictions or thresholds.

I received a communication from them that they have changed the conditions in such a way that the account is unusable, with a 10GB data limit. This was done without my prior consent and all communication for a refund has fallen on deaf ears.

This has been the experience of many user on the mybroadband.co.za forums and I would like to lodge an official complaint
