Afrihost Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

I complained about the speed and their response was that it was Telkom's fault. Their advice was that I should ask them to reset my line at the exchange.

WTF! I am going to forward this to Gian and if I don't get a satisfactory response I am leaving.

At this rate Afrihost is only going to have 384 and 512kbit users. I'm happy with my 384kbit at the moment, but I can understand why the 4Mbit users are ticked.

Ticked at the moment, 'cos since this morning my account won't authenticate.

Do you even have time to listen or look at 10Gb of music/movies??? OR heaven forbid that it is games, where do you people get the time to do this?

Ever heard of steam? Xlive HD streams?

Received this in response to my complaint of slow speed from Afrihost:

many thanks for your feedback. We have been aware that users in the Cape region have been experiencing problems since thursday, where various exchanges were affected. In addition the line testing that is taking place, we find that users are also experiencing variable speeds that range from 4-8/10MB, & as the line speeds are not stable the result also in higher latencies & slow speeds, also where the lines drop the connections.

What i can is have telkom re-sync your line on the exchange as well.
Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Double checked my sync speed and it was indeed only sync'ing at 2MB, after a quick call to Telkom and a reshaping of the ports and reseting of my router it is now back to 4MB. Although my speed is still slow. My speed test now comes in at:

Although when I switched to my pre-paid account with another service provider it was actually full speed. There is something seriously wrong with Afrihost.

As bokka1 said earlier I too am a bit of an Afrihost fan. My reason for joining them initially was due to their low cost bandwidth options but since going uncapped on my 4mb line my service has never been more unreliable than of late. I honestly feel they have bitten more than they can chew proverbially speaking of course.

Mweb, as much as I love to hate you I am forced to come knocking cap in hand for an account...... See ya soon...

yesterday my torents were flying at 350+ kb/s...

now im struggling with 60 kb/s with very good seeds..

i have gone over the 30gb limit today so maybe i have been moved to the special category ?!?

I'm on a 384 account. for the first 6 days the account was heavenly, but now my max speeds are at 18kb/s. I downloaded about 15 gigs in the first 6 days now I can only get a few hundred megabytes in an entire night of download off of newservers. I learned they were throttling and shaping after I had signed up for them and they said they were only throttling the 4mb lines. Apparently they are also shaping and throttling the 384 lines as well. So is it a 15gb limit, then they drop the 384 line down to a 128 line? It really is quite aggravating that they give no information about this.

tell me about it..

if i knew about the ''caps'', i would have gone to mweb..

now i will be stuck with 192kbps speeds after 150gb...im already on 30gb

to be honest 200 gb is the bare min i need each month..

its easy to see how some ppl go as high as 800 GB monthly on axxess express +

A quick maths exercise:

Afrihost 4096 uncapped @ R497 / R14.50 per GB = ~34GB (Roughly the 30GB point where heavy shaping kicks in)
So you're getting 30GB at their special rate, full speed, then another 30GB heavily shaped before the throttling occurs.

Extend this to 384k package and you get this:
Afrihost 384 uncapped @ R197 / R14.50 per GB = ~13.5GB
Given the situation above I would then expect to see heavy shaping on a 384k account at around 15GB. This seems to bear with what is reported above.

A little maths.

Note: I do not claim that this is how Afrihost are working it. I'm just speculating!

The 384k has major shaping for torrents... im downloading at around 6 - 10 KB/s using a 384k account.... I dont think there will be any throttling on this account...

I still get my 35 - 40k on torrents? During the day it sucks, but at night it's fine. Just make sure there are enough seeders.
